The British Consulate General in Düsseldorf is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking for a Trade Adviser to join our Department for International Trade (DIT) team on a one-year fixed-term contract, to support the work of a new Europe enquiry hub.

This role could either be shared by two part-time (50%) colleagues, or one full-time colleague. Please state your preference clearly in your application.

The Department for International Trade (DIT) promotes British trade and investment around the world; helps to build an appetite for British goods and services globally; and works to encourage foreign investment into the UK. DIT also brings together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade & investment and to help businesses to succeed. The DIT team in Germany comprises 30 people in Düsseldorf, Munich and Berlin. As a friendly and supportive team it works with both German investors and British companies doing business in Germany across the main business sectors of the economy. For more information about DIT please follow the link.

The new position will work closely with a pilot regional enquiry hub and with DIT’s export support network in the UK to identify and drive high potential British exporters, including innovative SMEs and Mid-Sized Businesses (MSBs) into supply chains in Germany. A core element of the role will be to deliver practical support to those companies, including information on market potential, in-market representation and clients. The job holder will also work proactively with the enquiry hub and with the UK regional network to communicate high value opportunities to business, in areas aligned to UK industrial strengths, as part of an innovative promotional programme.

As with all DIT positions, there will be a focus on working collaboratively with colleagues across the Embassy team - on policy, science & innovation and outreach - to maximise opportunities for the UK. The work will be varied and demanding and the successful candidate will need to be a flexible, committed self-starter, able to juggle priorities and to work on demanding timelines.

In more detail, main responsibilities will include:

  • Support the Europe enquiry hub pilot in delivering commercial services, guidance, information and support to high potential British exporters – including innovative small companies, entrepreneurs and MSBs;
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across Europe to ensure a comprehensive and joined-up approach that maximises the returns for high potential exporters – using success in one European market as a springboard to success in another;
  • Help to build in-market networks and partnerships able to provide commercial services, guidance, information and support alongside DIT teams;
  • Help to create and maintain strong and mutually beneficial relationships with DIT’s export support network in the UK to identify, target and engage a pipeline of high potential clients. Contribute to efforts to communicate opportunities in the European market through support for an imaginative regional promotional programme.

  • Excellent German and English language skills (written and spoken);
  • Sound research and IT Skills.
  • Previous commercial experience would be useful;
  • Good project management, including an eye for detail, to ensure that all aspects of service delivery have been thought through carefully;
  • Customer focus: a concern for quality and drive for continuous improvement in the service provided;
  • Excellent communication skills to work well with commercial clients, external contacts and a wide and diverse Embassy team;
  • Drive and enthusiasm combined with the ability to deliver, working as part of a team;
  • Resourcefulness and ability to act on own initiative, with an ability to find creative solutions when the unexpected occurs.
