The British Embassy in Vienna is looking for a Justice and Home Affairs Officer to join its political team on a six-month fixed-term contract. The successful applicant will support the political section at British Embassy Vienna, with a particular focus on Justice & Home Affairs, domestic politics, Austrian foreign policy, and a range of Brexit-related issues including citizens’ rights.

The job-holder will work to the head of the political section, and alongside other members of the political and press team. Successful performance would see them adding value in reporting and analysis, strengthening the team’s ability to engage in depth with interlocutors, including Austrian Government officials on EU and non-EU related issues through policy expertise. The job-holder will also need to be flexible, taking up a range of foreseen and unforeseen tasks.

 Roles and responsibilities:


  • Analysis and reporting on all of the policy areas listed above, as well as others as need arises. This involves proactively scanning for upcoming issues, and engaging on identified priorities. It also includes participating in internal discussion of policy issues and developing and implementing the embassy’s response to them;
  • Support on Brexit-related engagement work with the Austrian government and other stakeholders;
  • Representing the embassy at briefings, conferences and other events;
  • Providing resilience in the team for Brexit-related contingencies and other policy needs;
  • Building a network within the British and Austrian contexts to deliver on the above priorities.

  • University Degree or experience in related fields,
  • Existing knowledge of Austrian and British political systems, policy priorities of UK and Austrian Governments;
  • Excellent German and English language skills (written and spoken, minimum C1 level);
  • Proven IT skills (Word, PowerPoint and Excel);
  • Good project management, including an eye for detail, to ensure that all aspects of service delivery are thought through carefully;
  • Customer focus: a concern for quality and drive for continuous improvement in the service provided;
  • Excellent communication skills to work well with external contacts and a wide and diverse Europe team within the organisation;
  • Drive and enthusiasm combined with the ability to deliver, working as part of a team;
  • Resourcefulness and ability to act on own initiative, with an ability to find creative solutions when the unexpected occurs.
  • An understanding of the UK and Austrian business environments;
  • Existing experience of working in government.

This is a local staff position in the British Embassy Vienna; it is not a diplomatic designated position. The position is subject to the terms and conditions of British Embassy employees.

This is a full-time temporary position of 5 days per week for a six months contract. Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for extra hours worked. The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys 14 Austrian / UK public holidays per year and we are committed to ensuring a work / life balance.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure they are legally able to work in Austria. The Embassy is not able to assist with any visa or sponsorship arrangements.

Monthly salary will be € 3,720 gross, payable 14 times a year for those liable for Austrian tax.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Austrian employment law.

Visa / Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Austria and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
