You will help to promote the UK’s foreign policy objectives in Hong Kong using our website and social media tools.  The successful candidate will also be intimately involved in assisting the work of the wider mission’s internal comms, through designing creative, eye-catching and innovative designs to be used throughout the office in written publications and in digital format (on internal comms screens).

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Public Diplomacy (45%): Lead, independently develop, and deliver creative digital communications for the UK Government in in Hong Kong.  As well as promoting centrally-issued content from London, you will be required to create your own digital assets for use on the British Consulate-General’s website, social media channels and in-house events.  You will be the day-to-day lead on producing attractive and innovative content and brand assets, and will play an active role in capturing photos and videos at events: experience of photography and / or videography, and editing, would therefore be an advantage.  The job will allow the successful applicant to help promote the work of the BCG, working on topics as diverse as VIP visits to and from the UK, public diplomacy events promoting and defending the Joint Declaration, rule of law, economic and equalities issues and publicising documents such as the Six Monthly Report to the UK Parliament on Hong Kong. No day will be the same!

Internal Comms and comms planning (20%): Lead on producing innovative content for internal communications within the British Consulate-General.  This will include producing content for in-house digital display boards, designing attractive written materials and an advisor on making content attention-grabbing. You will also be the lead officer producing a weekly communications grid to co-ordinate and oversee cross-departmental communications efforts across the Consulate and the British Council.

Digital Management (20%): As lead web editor, you will manage the Consulate-General’s website, designing and editing high-quality content, in compliance with the standards set by the UK Government’s Digital Service.  You will be tasked with widening Post’s digital reach and engagement on social media platforms. You will need to ensure the Consulate’s social media channels (currently Facebook and Twitter) remain relevant in a fast-changing social media landscape, opening new channels as the social media landscape evolves.  You should ensure that all posts implement branding guidelines and comply with the highest standards one would expect from the UK Government’s online presence: attention to detail, in English and Chinese is essential.  Evaluating the success of your campaigns will be crucial: you will be required to evaluate the digital media activities, including monitoring visitor statistics, feedback and engagement.

News Reporting (10%): The role will allow the role holder to monitor and report accurately and professionally local online media reactions to topical political news on social media channels on a regular basis.  On occasion you may also be asked to assist press colleagues in producing the British Consulate-General’s internal daily press summary (particularly when covering a colleague’s absence), or assist with the Consulate-General’s response to crises (a natural disaster, for example).  Flexibility will be key.

Resilience (5%): Build team resilience as a member of the Communications Team by training a team member on update and maintenance of digital platforms.

  • Excellent graphic design skills and a creative flair to help turn your ideas into reality.  Experience of operating independently, often under time pressure, to produce creative design assets.
  • Proven experience in a range of IT applications and software including content management systems, image-editing and graphic design software.  You should have solid experience and proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite and MS Windows software.  We are particularly interested in candidates with strong Abode Illustrator and InDesign experience: please be prepared to share examples of your work if called to interview.
  • A strong awareness of social media trends and good experience in managing social media platforms for corporate, NGOs, academic or governmental organisations.
  • Strong written and editorial skills.  Good attention to detail, with a sound understanding of writing convincingly for the web and engaging online audiences.

  • Photography and videography a bonus, as is proficiency in Adobe Photoshop software.
