View Vacancy - Head of Political Section (Temporary), British Embassy Lima
Main purpose of job
Lead on monitoring and reporting of key political developments in Peru. Provide strategic counsel to the Ambassador and play a role as part of the Embassy’s senior management team. Please note this is a fixed term maternity cover contract.
What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?
- Proactively monitor and report to colleagues in the Embassy and London on political issues that affect British interests.
- Provide strategic advice to the Ambassador to help maximise the impact of her time and public engagements on the UK-Peru bilateral relationship.
- Represent the British Embassy at a range of events and meetings, including with senior stakeholders from the Peruvian government.
- Oversee the delivery of collaborative projects between the UK and Peru that help to strengthen bilateral relationships.
- Coordinate VIP visits to and from the UK, working closely with colleagues in the region and in London.
- Manage a colleague that leads the Embassy’s work on human rights, including countering modern day slavery.
- Contribute to the good governance and effective running of the Embassy as part of the senior management team.
Resources managed (staff and expenditure):
Line Manager for 1 X A2; Countersigning Officer for 1 x intern
Oversee Programme Funds of around £200,000
Essential on arrival:
- A college/university level degree, preferably in Politics and/or International Relations but other academic disciplines will be considered, as long as an active interest in politics can be demonstrated;
- Five years relevant work experience;
- Fluent in English and Spanish (written and spoken).
Desirable:
- Experience working in an English-speaking environment;
- Project and programme management experience.
You must hold the independent right to live and work legally in Peru.

The successful candidate will have full access to the UK Diplomatic Academy and online training resources and will be encouraged to take full advantage of both formal and informal learning events.
Working patterns
The British Embassy Lima aims to be a flexible employer so we are open to considering flexible working proposals to support the wider commitments of our staff. Applicants should however be aware that this is a critical role in the Embassy and will, at times, require evening work.
