Main purpose of job:

As a key member of the British High Commission’s Trade Policy Team you will help deliver progress in the UK-India Trade Policy relationship. This will include working across the UK Government’s network in India to support the removal of market access barriers in key sectors; providing analysis and reporting on key developments that inform policy development; and support the delivery of the annual JETCO ministerial meeting.

The Trade Policy Team leads on the UK-India bilateral trade relationship, providing analysis, direction and reporting, as well as engaging with key stakeholders in business, the UK government and the Government of India. The job holder will need to be flexible in responding to changes in scope and priorities of the trade policy team.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Support the implementation of the UK-India Joint Trade Review recommendations across priority sector workstreams: 

  • Lead on delivering the ICT and Life Science and Health Care workstreams in the Joint Working Group on Trade. This work will require you to collaborate with colleagues across the UK Government’s India Network (DIT Sector Teams, issue policy leads, British High Commission senior management and the Trade Policy Team), colleagues in London, and businesses to:

    1) Analyse and understand market access barriers in the sector;
    2) Develop and deliver an engagement strategies to progress the issue with Government of India; 

Provide analysis and reporting that supports the development of the overarching bilateral trade policy relationship with India: 

  • Use the expertise you develop of the ICT and Life Sciences sectors, as well as the insights of India’s policy making in these sectors, to:

    1) Support the evolution and delivery of the bilateral trade policy relationship with India;
    2) Identify opportunities to progress wider UK objectives by effectively linking your work with other parts of the UK India Network.

Provide a secretariat function to the UK-India Joint Working Group on Trade

  • Working with colleagues in the UK Government and the Government of India, agree a schedule, agenda and minutes for meetings of the Joint Working Group
  • Provide support in preparing for the annual JETCO Ministerial meeting, between the Secretary of State for International Trade, and Minister of Commerce and Industry

Qualifications:

Graduate in Economics, International Relations, Business, or other allied fields.

Experience:

  • Candidate should have 3-5 years of relevant work experience, ideally with exposure to the technology and/or healthcare sectors
  • Prior experience in engaging with senior business/ government stakeholders
  • Strong analytical and communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a good track record as a team player
  • Excellent ability to deliver on tight deadlines and turn around requests efficiently
  • Candidate should be proactive, a self-starter and have the ability to adapt to changes

Desirable:

  • Experience in interacting with a variety of stakeholders and working in a multi-cultural environment
  • A strong understanding of Government of India’s policy making structures/environment
  • Experience in doing economic analysis
  • Understanding of Indian Trade policy

For British High Commission (BHC) candidates, the Local Staff BHC Terms & Conditions will apply. 

For other than BHC candidates, salary will be INR 94,405 per month plus 12% provident fund and 6%  Superannuation Fund.
