Main purpose of job
To support the Northern Ireland Bureau in promoting NI by driving our social media presence, events and public profile.
What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?
- Act as the public face of the Bureau among the growing cadre of young professional groups in DC, representing the Bureau at designated events and giving presentations as appropriate;
- Promote NI’s cultural and educational sectors;
- Act as primary liaison point between the Washington Ireland Program and the Bureau;
- Develop, manage, and execute events to increase Northern Ireland’s profile and visibility with specific target markets and audiences;
- Support the Director and First Secretary on preparations for Visits from NI, conduct relevant research, make initial contact with relevant organisations in DC and liaise with Departmental staff to ensure maximum benefit. Pull together all briefing associated with the Visit and ensure smooth execution of Visits;
- Report on US and Canadian political developments;
- Manage NIB social media sites (i.e. Facebook & Twitter) & website and develop a Communications Strategy for the Bureau and the new Director;
- Respond to general enquiries from the public and other organizations;
- Potential management of an Administrative Support Officer (under review);
- Other duties as assigned, including administrative duties.
Essential on arrival:
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or post-graduate degree in communications, events management, international affairs or a related field.
- Solid understanding of Microsoft Office and social media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Twitter).
- Minimum two years experience of working in a public relations and/or events management environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to write and speak persuasively.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and on his/her own initiative.
- Strong planning and organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise, work effectively under tight deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
- Sound judgment and discretion in handling confidential information, as well as the ability to conduct oneself in a professional manner.
- Some understanding of the workings of US and Northern Ireland political institutions.
- Willing to travel to other parts of the US and to Northern Ireland on business.
- Must be fluent in English (written and spoken).

Working hours
The net hours are 40 hours per week / 8 hours per day but the succesful candidate may be able to work flexibly, subject to Line Management approval.
