The British High Commissioners Residence is the site of representational entertainment for the British High Commission in Canberra. The position of chef is central to the success of the image of the High Commission.  The main purpose of your job will be full responsibility for the High Commissioners residence kitchen and cooking for all official events. The position is also responsible for ordering provisions, checking suppliers' invoices, producing final quotes for each event, maintaining the kitchen and all its equipment to a high standard. You will report to the Residence manager and High Commissioner.

Roles and responsibilities:

    • Select and buy the neccesary ingredients for preparing meals and catering, as well as other kitchen equipment where neccessary;
    • Work with the Residence Manager to plan a creative and appetising menus that meet individual stakeholder requirements, catering for any special dietary requirements, responding to feedback and being flexible to last minute changes;
    • To cook food for multiple events (including breakfast, lunch, dinner, sandwich lunch, afternoon tea, canape reception, buffet, working dinner) and varying numbers of guests, to a consistently high standard of quality, presentation, with emphasis on showcasing the best of British and Australian produce;
    • Keep abreast of food trends, new products and availaibilty;
    • Co-ordinate and manage additonal temporary kitchen staff as required (e.g larger events);
    • The job holder may be required to provide wider Residence support e.g helping with set up for major events;
    • Other duties and responsibilities as required.
    • The ability to work flexibly, depending on the needs of the High Commissioner, including the availability to work flexible hours if required
    • Formal qualification in Commercial Cookery
    • Evidence of strong organisational, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to deal with a wide range of stakeholders.
    • Excellent kitchen management and hygiene control
    • A valid driving licence
    • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook and Explorer)

    Salary is at AU$32,880.53 per annum (paid out monthly), plus 11% superannuation. This is a part-time role with initial appointment for two years.  Appointment is subject to an AFP records check and UK security clearance.

    Open to Australian citizens, permanent residents, and partners/ dependents of UK-based diplomatic staff currently posted in Australia.
