Intellectual Property Office

Main purpose of job:

The Intellectual Property Office (UK IPO) is the UK Government agency responsible for intellectual property policy and rights granting. It is an agency of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). The successful applicant will work with the Regional IP Attaché, to support her with delivering the IP agenda in LATAC Region.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Monitor all the pieces of legislation about IP in the Congress and keep the team updated;
  • Keep an updated database of IP developments in Brazil, and report these developments back to UK stakeholders;
  • Keep track of the IPO´s successes and developments in Brazil, that will later be transformed into case studies;
  • Organize and join events with key stakeholders – occasional travel may be required;
  • Keep track of IP developments in LATAC Countries, mainly in Peru, Colombia and Chile;
  • Organize the team´s finance and budget.

Essential on arrival:

  • Exceptional organisational skills and have a keen eye for detail;
  • Proactivity and willingness to learn about IP;
  • Knowledge of the Brazilian legislative system;
  • Experience of working in challenging political and customer facing environments, where you have used your resilience, patience and adaptability in sometimes challenging, difficult and stressful situations;
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills with an ability to communicate at all levels;
  • Ability to take responsibility for the quality of own work and keep managers informed of how your work is progressing;
  • Have sound judgement, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage stakeholders expectations;
  • Ability to work at pace in an environment where priorities change to effectively prioritise, manage and execute multiple tasks within tight deadlines;
  • Proficient IT skills including Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn FCDO systems

Desirable:

  • Basic knowledge of IP
  • A good knowledge of multi-cultural Britain, its language, and geography;
  • Spanish language skills;
  • An ability to travel at short notice, in Brazil or further afield.

Learning and development opportunities:

The British Consulate-General in Sao Paulo encourages all staff to develop their capabilities, through both formal training (courses) and informal (job-shadowing, coaching, on-the-job training etc). The network offers a wide range of learning and development opportunities, including job-specific training as necessary and broader learning linked to the FCDO Diplomatic Academy. 

The successful candidate will be expected to complete a number of e-learning courses on consular assistance work and crisis within the first month of employment. The jobholder must be available to attend a one-week training course in the UK within the first 3-6 months of employment and there are opportunities to participate in regional conferences abroad. 

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

Working patterns:

This is a permanent, full-time role - 36 hours/week, Monday to Friday. We are currently piloting hybrid working (some time working in the office, some time working from home) as we transition back to normal working practices, while ensuring the health and safety of our staff. You will be expected to spend some time out of the office, engaging with partners and stakeholders; some time in the office; and will be able to have the flexibility to work from home, up to two days per week. If the context of the pandemic changes, the proportion of time spent at home / in office / in external engagements may change.

The Mission has a smarter working policy and is committed to offering flexible working patterns balanced with the operational requirements of the role. Exceptionally, the successful candidate may be required to participate in training, call out arrangements for emergency cases or crisis work out of hours.
