The British Embassy Tel Aviv is recruiting a Science and Innovation Officer who will drive forward the UK-Israel Science and Innovation relationship.

Science and Innovation is one of the most important bilateral issues between the UK and Israel. This is a vital role in the British Embassy, working closely with British Council colleagues. It attracts strong interest from UK senior officials and Ministers who will visit from time to time to advance the agenda.

The jobholder will have much autonomy to devise and deliver priority projects and activities under the supervision of the Ambassador. It is an ideal role to develop skills in working internationally and delivering real world results with impact.

The job holder will lead on Science and Innovation for the UK in Israel, increasing collaboration and strengthening the bilateral relationship. He/ She will promote the UK’s excellence in science and innovation in Israel, including:

  • Prosperity: Enhancing UK growth and exports; connecting UK innovative industries and science and innovation expertise to Israeli counterparts;
  • Security: Delivering solutions to global and UK challenges via UK-Israel collaboration, including in health, energy, and global resilience;
  • Influence: Strengthening UK foreign policy influence in Israel through science and innovation;
  • Development: Supporting international development goals via UK-Israel collaboration.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Identifying, devising, and implementing campaigns to drive forward the Science and Innovation Israel strategy, focussing on promoting UK innovation and science excellence in Israel. 
  • Build innovation bridges between UK and Israeli R&D and Innovation centres of excellence, in support of the UK's Industrial Strategy.
  • Informing policy development in science and innovation between the UK and Israel.
  • Serve as Secretariat for the UK-Israel Science Council.
  • Providing strategic input to British Council-led science programmes and researcher mobility.
  • Regularly reporting to London on policy developments in the region.
  • Managing one member of staff.

  • Engaging Internationally – Effectiveness in this area is about leading internationally, engaging our staff, contacts, and international partners to help deliver UK Government objectives while living the Civil Service values and serving the UK public.
  • Ability to develop and then implement an ambitious strategy. 
  • Proven project management experience and delivery. 
  • Credibility in the innovation and science communities in Israel. 
  • Experience of working internationally. 
  • Experience of working with and managing teams. 
  • Excellent people and communication skills.
  • Language: Fluent English.
  • Experience of working on innovation and science issues with the UK
  • Fluent Hebrew a strong advantage. Arabic language skills also an advantage.

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including the non negotiable salary of ILS 14,550 per month, plus social benefits.

Contract duration is for one (1) year with a possibility of renewal.

Working hours are Monday to Thursday, 8:00–16:00 and Friday 8:00–13:30, flexibility will be required including occasional evening events.

Parking facilities will not be provided or paid for by the Embassy.

No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.


The position is available immediately.

The appointment will be subject to security clearance and a probationary period of six months.

A full induction will be offered, which will include familiarisation and subsequent visits to the UK. The full range of the British Embassy’s learning & development programme, including the pioneering Diplomatic Academy programme, will be available.

Eligibility:

Candidates must be able to work legally in Israel.
