Bilateral co-operation between the UK and Italy on Serious and Organised Crime (SOC) and security issues is a high priority for the UK. This is an exciting and rewarding 5-month role where you will conduct a research deep-dive to enhance our understanding of UK-Italy cooperation on Serious and Organised Crime, in the UK, Italy and in third countries. You will work with a range of stakeholders across the Italy Network to deliver on projects and to support the Embassy’s policy objectives on SOC. 

You will already have excellent knowledge of SOC, and will be able to support the team in reporting on SOC developments in Italy, attending and reporting on relevant events, leading on SOC visits and establishing a policy dialogues, as well as providing administrative and project management support to deliver a range of workshops. 

You will have excellent communication skills, which you will use to brief senior colleagues, draft a range of written materials including reports and effectively communicate the UK’s position to external contacts. You will be used to working in a fast-paced environment, and able to work on multiple tasks to deadlines. You will have strong networking skills, and quickly establish and maintain a wide network of relevant contacts within the Italy Network and across Italian academia and civil society. You will also develop good working relationships with UK officials in departments such as the Home Office and Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. 

Main roles and responsibilities:

  • Delivery: Research and present analysis to increase UK government understanding of SOC in Italy. This could also include delivering masterclasses and drafting reports to disseminate and share knowledge. To take forward requests from SOCnet on organised crime in Italy. 
  • Project Delivery: To deliver two standalone projects – one on illicit finance and the other on social inclusion. 
  • Strategy: To ensure that the SOC country action plan is up to date, and that SOC objectives are adequately reflected in the Italy country business plan. 
  • Communication: To build relationships with key stakeholders to inform work; this will likely include building new relationships with academics, think tanks and researchers.   
  • Personal: Self-starter, able to juggle competing priorities.   
  • Corporate – contribute to cross-cutting Embassy activities. Actively engage in corporate activities and initiatives in the Italy Network.

The job holder will report to the JHA section, part of the Foreign and Security Policy team within British Embassy Rome Rome. The role will require occasional travel within Italy, and to the UK when conditions allow.

  • Fluency both oral and written at least at a C1 level in English and in Italian, or equivalent
  • Knowledge of Serious and Organised Crime and policy responses
  • Academic background in SOC
  • Outstanding organisational skills
  • Ability to build rapport at all levels internally and externally
  • Strategic thinking
  • Strong written skills, including presenting complex issues clearly
  • Knowledge of UK and Italian Government policy priorities 
  • Experience of  working with government or international organisations

This is a full-time temporary position with a contract of 5 months, graded B3 (L) according to the FCDO grading structure. The monthly gross salary is Euro € 2.929,00. 

Working hours are 35 hrs per week Monday to Friday 09.00 – 17.00 .

The appointment is subject to security clearance, a two month probation and a professional background check.

All staff employed by the British Embassy are subject to Italian income tax rate deductions (IRPEF).  However the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.
