Department for International Trade roles (DIT)
Department for International Trade (DIT)

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

This is a senior post in the Department for International Trade’s (DIT) network in India and part of our leadership team. You will lead on three areas: a) oversight of the DIT India Tech Sector Team, b) innovation lead across all of our DIT sector teams, and c) Deputy Head of Mission of the British Deputy High Commission in Bangalore. Your task is to support UK exporters to grow exports to India, through a combination of business wins, strategic relationship management, and incremental market access. You will have a challenging portfolio that involves matrix management across India, but you will have the opportunity to be creative and think (and act) strategically about our approach to the context of working in India.

A key emerging power, India is a priority for the UK Government and one of our most important trade and investment partners. It is an exciting time to be joining the network. The UK will soon be leaving the European Union and there is stronger focus than ever on our objectives of increasing trade and investment with India. The post is based in Bangalore – the technology capital of India, but you will travel frequently across India and internationally, including to the UK.

In terms of tech and innovation – India is the topmost off shoring destination for IT companies across the world with emerging technologies expected to offer a £770.5 billion opportunity by 2020. The Indian telecommunications market is also booming with the growth of smart-phone adoption expected to be worth an estimated net addition of £350 million by year 2020. In addition – last year the UK and Indian PMs have agreed on a technology partnership between the UK and India. There is not a better time to be working in this area.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for delivering DIT trade objectives in the tech sector in pursuit of DIT’s ambition to grow UK exports to 35% of GDP (30%):

The UK has massive strengths in tech and the sector is one of the core strands of our trade strategy in India. You will have overall responsibility for developing strategy and delivering export growth through a combination of commercial support (exports and ODI), market access and market development. You will lead the 5-strong India Tech Team, located in Bangalore, New Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad, providing strategic guidance and oversight of the team’s work and developing their capability and capacity. To support delivery you will have access to a team travel, marketing and training budget of £53k (FY 19/20).

Developing and managing key UK/Indian relationships and acting as the primary representational resource for your teams (20%):

You will identify and develop relationships with key companies and multipliers, and government officials in your sectors and use these links to achieve your objectives and deliver for the UK. This will include representational activities and public speaking.

Take cross-cutting responsibility for our ‘innovation’ strand of the Regional Trade Plan – with the ambition to ensure 75% of all trade team’s work is on Innovation and Finance (25%):

You will work across sector teams to ensure that we are supporting only the most innovative companies from the UK into India. You will develop and build relationships with influencers within the UK and India to ensure that HMG is engaged and in-front of the developing innovation agenda. You will be the primary point of engagement for the DIT trade teams with the Science and Innovation Network and the Tech Partnership team.

Perform Deputy Head of Mission (DHM) duties (20%):

As DHM in Bangalore you will: manage the 8-strong Corporate Services team, overseeing an upcoming office move; provide cover for the Deputy High Commissioner’s absences; and offer leadership, guidance and support for the wider Bangalore team. BDHC Bangalore is home to ~30 staff, half of which are DIT, with others from the FCO/BEIS Science & Innovation Network, FCO’s Prosperity & Economics team, Corporate Services and the Welsh Government. Bangalore does not have responsibility for visa or consular work in Karnataka (both are handled by Chennai). Otherwise, Bangalore is like other sub-ordinate post, providing a quality platform for all UK government departments to deliver from, with responsibility for crisis-preparedness and the provision of political and economic reporting from Karnataka and strategic communications for the Southern India Network.

Contribute to wider corporate objectives (5%):

As part of DIT’s leadership team in South Asia, you will be responsible for driving corporate behaviours across the network (not just in the sector teams for which you have responsibility), leading by example.

WHAT WE DO:

DIT works with UK based businesses to ensure their success in international markets through exports and investment. We also encourage and support overseas companies to look at the UK as the best place to set up or expand their business. Improving trade and investment links with India is a UK Government priority. PM Modi’s Government has opened up major opportunities (e.g. SMART Cities, Make in India, Digital India) and there is a determination by the UK to see a major expansion in bilateral trade and investment.

Our day-to-day activity is led by a team of Cluster Managers who each lead on different sectors where significant opportunities exist for UK business. The DIT South Asia team is spread across eight posts in India plus teams in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and soon in Nepal and currently consists of c.115 people. You will join a high-performing, hybrid team of supportive colleagues made up of UK-based and locally engaged staff.

WHAT WE WANT FROM YOU:

We will give you the freedom and space to develop the sector and build your networks. At the same time we will support you too with opportunities to get the right learning and development, career development and opportunities to travel. You will need to be collaborative and flexible too to fit in with the network’s ethos; and, importantly, focussed on delivering results and contributing to the wider corporate efforts especially around our busy Ministerial/VIP visit programme and flagship events in the UK and India. To be successful:
