Main purpose of job

The Economics Administrative and Policy Officer is based in the Global and Economic Policy Group within the British Embassy Washington.  This is an important position within the group, supporting the Economics Team’s work, presenting opportunities for standalone policy research, and reporting.  The jobholder will be enthusiastic about promoting UK interests in the United States and passionate about helping the UK to understand the US.  The successful candidate will have an interest in economic, financial and trade issues, and prior experience of working in these areas would be beneficial. 

The role comprises of two core functions:

  1. Administrative support (budget, events, scheduling, travel)
  2. Economics policy support (briefing, data analysis, research, reporting)

What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

Administrative support to the Economic Team [60%]

  • Manage contact and event databases; plan embassy events; schedule meetings; book and manage travel; administer expenses; prepare draft letters and reports; help with finance requests.
  • Coordinate programs and logistics for team members’ visits to New York and other cities.
  • Information management, including leading on the team’s transition to cloud based storage. 
  • Monitor and profile expenditure.

Economic research and social policy support [40%]

  • Update monthly UK economy communications material with data and key messages on the UK economy and the UK-US economic relationship
  • Conduct research, including policy reports, analysis of trends and background for meetings.
  • Support the team’s engagement with Capitol Hill by tracking legislation, mapping stakeholders and monitoring Congressional news.  Identify, attend, and report on relevant Congressional hearings on Capitol Hill.
  • Track key economic statistics for the UK and US, including using the team’s Bloomberg terminal for data analysis and to produce charts of prominent economic stories.
  • Draft policy and bio briefings for meetings.
  • Track economic and social policy news, events and developments on specific research topics, briefing team members and London stakeholders on results.
  • Attend seminars and conferences (e.g. think tanks) in the District of Maryland and Virginia (DMV) and report back on key points.

Essential on arrival:

  • Organisational and interpersonal skills, together with an ability to work well with others on a wide range of issues.
  • Excellent research skills, including ability to think creatively, problem solve, and seek out answers proactively.
  • Clear and concise oral and written skills.
  • Flexibility in a team setting, with an enthusiastic approach to work.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently to complete administrative tasks.
  • Interest in / knowledge of economic, financial and trade-related public policy issues.

Desirable: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as economics, political economy, business or finance.
  • Data analysis experience.
  • Knowledge or interest in UK policy strengths and priorities.
