Main purpose of job:

Working within the Defence Section of the British Embassy to enhance the UK’s Military footprint within Korea and NE Asia. Provide direct support to both the Defence Attaché and Defence Section, build and maintain key stakeholder relationships, organise inward visit travel requirements, provide translation/interpretation services during meetings and advise the Defence Attaché on local customs and traditions.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Maintain Defence Attaché’s / Defence Section’s Calendar.
  • Provide Translation / Interpretation services for Defence Section Documents and Meetings.
  • Liaise with Key Stakeholders (MND, MPVA, ROK Military Single Services), maintaining/further developing the ROK/UK bilateral relationship.
  • Provide support to Inward and Outward Visit Programmes: to include transport/accommodation bookings; liaison with ROK Military and Corporate organisations; and direct interaction with UK MOD desk officer where you are Defence Section Visit Lead.
  • Advise on Protocol Issues.
  • Contribute to wider British Embassy objectives and events.
  • Innovative self-starter with the ability to initiate work and see it through to completion with minimal oversight.
  • Able to seek advice and assistance when necessary.
  • A team player able to work in a busy open plan environment supporting the whole Defence Section.
  • Will also require a cooperative and collegiate approach to working with colleagues in other teams and be willing to contribute to wider Embassy corporate objectives.
  • Able to communicate with a range of contacts from a diverse range of sectors and ministries (written, verbally and prepare presentations).
  • Must be able to deliver at pace, working to tight deadlines amid ever changing priorities.
  • Fluent in both spoken and written Korean and English.
  • Previous experience of working within military environments and an existing network in the Korean military.
  • General knowledge of the Republic of Korea Military and the NE Asian Geopolitical environment.
  • Possess an awareness of the strategic role of the Defence Section and the relevance of its deliverables and objectives.
  • A working knowledge of the UK.

Although the standard working week will be 0900 – 1715 Monday to Thursday and 0900-1700 Friday the dynamic nature of Defence Section business will require the post holder to flex their schedule to match section output requirements. This includes the requirement to occasionally work extended days and weekends. The British Embassy Defence Section supports flexible working and is happy to discuss on an individual basis.
