View Vacancy - Assistant Media and Communications Officer (BEL415)
The United Kingdom’s Joint Delegation to NATO (UKDEL NATO) is the vital link between the UK Government and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Its principal roles are to promote British interests in NATO and to keep UK Ministers and Government Departments informed about NATO discussions. The Delegation is now looking for an Assistant Media and Communications Officer to join its Communications Team.
The main purpose of this role is to assist the Delegation to communicate the UK Government’s commitment to and priorities for NATO by contributing to the Delegation’s situational awareness and digital media output, as well as helping to deliver successful visits and events.
The job holder will be responsible for briefing the wider Delegation on breaking news, media coverage trends, and key international events; managing the Delegation’s digital media accounts; developing and maintaining contacts with journalists and colleagues across Whitehall, FCO Posts and NATO; assisting with Ministerial press activities and highlighting public diplomacy opportunities to senior Delegation staff; and undertaking support staff duties such as document distribution.
We promote an adaptable and responsive approach, which means the job may evolve over time to deal with changing circumstances and priorities. The job holder will occasionally be required to work extended hours during peak periods, including in the run-up to Ministerial meetings and Summits.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Media Monitoring
- Monitor UK and international media;
- Prepare and deliver a weekly briefing;
- Provide daily updates, including lines to take;
- Prepare a fortnightly newsletter Digital;
- Management of Twitter feed;
- Management of the gov.uk webpage.
Public Affairs
- Maintain a database of press contacts;
- Maintain network of contacts in other Embassies and Delegations to promote key stories;
- Track key international events, including security and defence related seminars, and compile a grid of notable communications opportunities;
- Recommend public diplomacy opportunities to Delegation senior leadership;
- Assist the Communications Officer with NATO campaign plans;
Visits and Events
- Assist in the organisation press activities for key events and visits, including Ministerial meetings and Summits.
Administrative
- Distribute documents to the Delegation;
- Other administrative duties, as necessary.
- Excellent IT and digital skills, including Outlook, Word and Excel;
- Strong interpersonal skills;
- Ability to work in a team;
- Initiative and the ability to organise and prioritise own workload;
- Creativity and ability to come up with new, innovative ideas;
- Adaptability under pressure;
- Good communications skills (written and oral);
- Ability to grasp complex issues quickly and communicate them simply and effectively;
- Fluent written and spoken English.
- Professional experience in public relations and/or communications;
- Experience running an organisation’s social media accounts;
- Experience of building networks and using third parties to amplify key messages;
- Experience and/or interest in International Relations.
This is a full-time, permanent contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week.
The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.
The monthly salary for this position is €3,024.50 (A2 level). Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.
