The British Embassy Riyadh has a vacancy for a Senior Trade Adviser, Energy and Resources under the Department for International Trade (DIT). This is for a fixed-term contract of two (2) years, with a possibility of extension depending on performance and operational requirements.

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the British Government’s trade and investment development organisation. Its aim is to enhance the competitiveness of companies in the UK through overseas trade and investments; and attract a continuing high-level of quality foreign direct investment into the UK. We work with UK-based businesses to ensure their success in international markets and encourage overseas companies to bring their high-quality investment to the UK. DIT has a network of three trade teams in Saudi Arabia (in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Al Khobar) that work closely together to deliver services to our customers.

The main purpose of this role is to support UK companies that are seeking to develop their business through trade with Saudi Arabia. As the lead for DIT’s Energy & Resources Cluster, the jobholder will help lead, promote, and deliver on opportunities within the clean energy commercial sector (energy transition, renewables, petrochemicals and mining) across the whole Saudi network. They will understand Saudi Arabia’s market trends and ambitions under Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 to identify valuable Export Opportunities and secure high value Export Wins, drawing on objectives from the Regional Trade Plan (RTP).

The jobholder will also need to be flexible as specific sector responsibilities could change in the future and this would be at the discretion of the DIT Saudi Arabia Director.

Although this role will be based in Riyadh, the jobholder will be expected to travel regularly between Riyadh and Al Khobar. 

 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Manage key relationships strategically with UK SMEs; DIT Sector team in London; Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Officer (FCDO) Prosperity teams; including trade associations: Saudi British Joint Business Council (SBJBC), Energy Industries Council (EIC), OBNI partners, Enhanced International Support Service (EISS) and KSA stakeholders to identify wider commercial opportunities within the energy portfolio. Translate these into Export Wins for UK companies.
  • Strategic Relationship Management (SRM) approach with interlocutors in the energy sector, including key UK stakeholders and companies (EPCs, SMEs, others).
  • Remain informed of key business trends and trajectory of the wider Energy portfolio linked to Vision 2030 goals and communicate/ resolve potential trade barriers for UK companies.
  • Provide market analysis and guidance on doing business in Saudi Arabia. Briefing both individual visitors and groups of UK companies on the characteristics of the Saudi market and support UK companies in pursuing export opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain strategic engagement with senior influencers – including leading the networks relationship with key government entities, including but not limited to: Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources, Saudi Aramco, Saudi Arabian Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), Renewable Energy Project Development Office (REPDO), Saudi Aramco, Ma’aden (the national mining company), and the Saudi Industrial Development Fund (SIDF).
  • Translate, support, and deliver the Energy & Resources Cluster business plan and market strategies to direct activity as part of the Regional Trade Plan (RTP).
  • Work with regional energy colleagues to develop joint cross-country projects within the Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan (MEAP) region; share best practices, lessons learned and assist in achieving regional targets.
  • Manage delivery of specific activities e.g., trade missions, inward and outward visits, programmes, country/ sector briefing as well as take a wider role into other corporate activities suggested by the Director of the British Trade Office in Al Khobar and senior members of the DIT team.
  • At the discretion of the senior management, the flexibility to support work on other sectors.

The jobholder will also manage one (1) Executive Officer (EO) and one (1) Administrative Officer (AO).

The above list is not exhaustive and the jobholder will be required to be flexible and take on other ad hoc tasks as required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any other response to a crisis affecting UK citizens.

Eligibility:

The position is available to Saudi Nationals and to current holders of valid Saudi residence permits or transferable iqamas. The successful candidate will be required to transfer their sponsorship to the British Embassy.

 

Working hours and remuneration:

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role.

Salary details:

  • Base Salary including Eid bonus - SAR 13,890.44
  • Housing Allowance - SAR 3,472.61 (subject to eligibility)*
  • Travel Allowance - SAR 400 (subject to eligibility)*

*Allowances are not payable to staff who receive official provision for such expenditure in some other form.

No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

This position is full-time, based on 35 hours per week. Normal working hours for the Embassy are from 08:00 to 15:00 from Sunday to Thursday, with core working hours from 10:00-15:00. Core working hours is the period of the day that employees are required to be at work. The working day outside of the core hours is a flexible period, which allows employees to choose when they work, subject to operational needs.  Flexible working arrangements may be considered based on operational requirements and agreement with the line manager, and in line with FCDO and Embassy policies.

The jobholder will be required to be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out of hours, especially during visits and events. 

Travel between Riyadh and Al Khobar is also required for this role.

The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-day probationary period.
