The British Embassy in Sofia is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Security Partnerships Officer for a maternity cover.

The Security Partnerships Officer will work with the Head of Security Partnerships to develop the UK’s security relationship with Bulgaria across the full range of the Embassy’s strategic, policy and operational activities, developing and maintaining strong contacts with Bulgarian security institutions to maximise the impact of the Embassy’s work, supporting the work of the Embassy’s JSOC (Joint Serious and Organised Crime) process and working closely with Political, Defence and Law Enforcement on cross-cutting aspects of the UK-Bulgaria bilateral relationship.

Roles and responsibilities

Development of the UK-BG bilateral security relationship

  • Work with the Head of Security Partnerships to deepen the bilateral security relationship, consider how the UK and Bulgaria can respond together to shared security threats, and how we can cooperate on the strategic, policy and operational levels.

  • Build and maintain a strong network of stakeholders; mainly within the Bulgarian administration, but also across UK departments.

  • Represent the Embassy at regional Cyber policy officer network meetings and assist the colleagues on initiatives to counter disinformation.

  • Assist with ongoing efforts in developing Bulgaria’s capacity in countering disinformation and cyber threats.

Understanding security developments.

  • Attend security-related events and conferences on behalf of the Embassy.

  • Follow and report on security developments in Bulgaria, summarising and translating reports when necessary.

JSOC support

  • Assist the Head of Security Partnerships with the Embassy’s JSOC process (the process which coordinates security-related work of the Embassy on a policy level), preparing meetings, liaising with participants and actioning action points.

  • Lead on the country based staff ‘mirror’ JSOC.

  • Liaise accross the Embassy teams to identify and develop project proposals to maximise available funding.

Cross-cutting Issues

  • Work with the Political Team on the proposed UK-EU Future Security Partnership.

  • Contribute to briefing for bilateral meetings.

  • Implement relevant security-related projects. Assist and liaise with Law Enforcement, Defence and Political Sections on other security-related projects.

  • Monitor COVID-19 measures and developments, reporting to colleagues and UK nationals as required.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral, in Bulgarian and English (minimum C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages*).

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, including Excel.

  • Good communication and organisational skills.

  • Knowledge of the Bulgarian administration and interest in Bulgarian politics, especially in the field of security.

  • Good analytical and research skills.

  • Ability to work well independently.

  • Project design, delivery and management skills.

This is a full-time, temporary position to cover for a maternity leave, of 36 hours per week (net of lunch breaks).

The successful candidate will receive a monthly salary of BGN 2463.97 gross. This job is based in Sofia.

Core skills training and mandatory trainings will be provided by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. All staff have a personal development plan and access to world class learning and development opportunities. 

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background and security clearance. Anyone with right of residence and employment in Bulgaria may apply, including all EU/EEA citizens and the family members of EU/EEA nationals exercising a treaty right in Bulgaria.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Bulgarian employment law.
