The British Embassy Riyadh has a vacancy for an Under Butler on a fixed term contract of two (2) years.

Working closely with the Residence Manager and other members of the Residence Team, the jobholder will provide high quality service in the smooth running of the British Ambassador’s Residence in Riyadh to ensure the comfort of all occupants and guests. They will ensure that the Residence facilities and services are delivered in a pro-active, discreet, thoughtful, and timely manner. This role is central to the smooth running of Her Majesty’s Ambassador’s (HMA) daily needs and key events including dinners, lunches and receptions for guests; as well as driving for Residence and private guests as and when required. 

 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Support in arranging different aspects of functions in the Residence. This will include but is not limited to supporting the Head Butler/ Residence Team in ensuring the successful delivery of a high level of service for all requirements relating to official business entertainment at the Residence, from afternoon tea, formal and informal breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, to large receptions, buffet parties, seminars and workshops.
  • Welcome guests and provide a high quality front of house service.
  • Events support including cleaning the silver, polishing the glassware and china, laying the dining table, and clearing away after the service of all meals, washing up and putting away all the items used; general porterage, including deliveries, tables, chairs, staging, etc. Provide waiting service during dinners, receptions, and other events.
  • Maintain downstairs rooms to a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene. This includes cleaning the floor, dusting, vacuuming, polishing glassware, china, brass and silver of the private study, TV room, residence office.
  • Greeting houseguests and showing them to their rooms, offering refreshments, and taking care of them throughout their stay.
  • Driving/ running errands including trips to suppliers and responsible for receiving, checking, and storing deliveries. These requests will be directed via the Residence Manager only.
  • Report technical or maintenance issues to the Head Butler.
  • Support the Residence Chef where required (training in basic culinary skills will be given).
  • Cover for the Head Butler during his absence.
  • Provide additional support to Residence Manager, Chef, Head Butler, and Housekeeper as required to ensure smooth running of the Residence. 

This is not an exhaustive list but covers the key set of tasks and responsibilities. The jobholder may be asked to carry out other ad-hoc duties upon discussion with the line manager. The jobholder will be expected to do all tasks within their level of skill and ability

  • Ability to work flexible hours in support of events hosted at the Residence, which will require regular evening work and some early mornings. There may also be some occasional weekend work.
  • Strong organisational and multitasking skills with the ability to perform well in a fast-paced environment. Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team
  • High standard of personal presentation and able to demonstrate discretion, courtesy, and consideration at all times.
  • Good IT/ MS Office skills.
  • Relevant experience in food and beverage service and/ or front of house service
  • Recognised qualification in food and beverage service/ front of house service or equivalent.
  • Background either at a diplomatic residence or within the hospitality industry is highly desirable.

Eligibility:

The position is available to Saudi nationals and to current holders of valid Saudi residence permits or transferable iqama. The successful candidate will be required to transfer their sponsorship to the British Embassy.

 

Working hours and remuneration:

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role.

Salary details:

  • Base Salary including Eid bonus - SAR 4,680.60

No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

This position is full-time, based on 48 hours per week. Timings covered in this role are Sunday to Thursday, from 07:00 to 21:00 (specific hours to be on a rota basis). The timings may be adjusted according to Residence requirements.

The jobholder should also be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will also be dictated by operational needs and will involve working out of hours (evening and weekend).

The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-day probationary period.
