The British Embassy in Spain is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking to recruit an Intern to integrate the Department for International Trade (DIT) in Bilbao. The duration of the internship is from 3 to 12 months (availability to be agreed). 

The selected  intern will have the chance to join a dynamic multinational/multicultural environment which will allow him/her to learn and acquire excellent experience of working in the Department for International Trade (DIT). He/she will work in a mainly administrative and support role with many opportunities to take part in different aspects of the team’s work such as event management and delivery, developing relationships with UK and Spanish companies, contributing to DIT priority initiatives, business reporting and social media communications. This is an ideal opportunity for candidates wishing to put into practice and broaden their business and communication skills.  The selected intern needs to be able to multitask, should be proficient in Spanish and English, and be able to adapt flexibly according to the needs of a small team. They should also be able to work remotely should the need arise and collaborate with our stakeholders and teams in Madrid and Barcelona to organise events and deliver business.

Roles and responsibilities

General support in DIT Bilbao’s two main agendas – Healthy Cohesive Societies and Green Transport Technologies – as well as support to the Head of Clean Growth in DIT Spain and other general business.

  • Project support (trade & investment)

  • Event management and coordination

  • VIP visits

  • Proactive stakeholder management

  • Administrative support (databases, datahub)

  • Market research, including of UK & Spanish businesses

  • DIT CRM tools

  • Support with social media

  • Proficient user in both written and spoken English and Spanish (C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages*)
  • High level of motivation and strong will to learn

  • Ability to work as part of a team as well as on own initiative when required

  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word and Power Point)
  • Ability to look for information about a company or sector on the Internet and obtain information by phone

  • Able to work under pressure and to juggle competing deadlines

  • Proactiveness and team worker

  • Some understanding of trade issues and/or familiarity with the UK and Spanish business sectors would be a bonus

This is a part-time and temporary internship contract of 3 months up to 1 year (provided both parties agree and there is a valid agreement with the university throughout the whole period).

Normal working hours are 25 per week.

Only applications of students enrolled in Universities in Spain will be accepted for now.

The successful candidate is subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.

The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
