Role of an Entry Clearance Officer:

The main purpose of the Entry Clearance Officer (ECO) role is to make decisions on applications for a United Kingdom visa.

ECOs make visa decisions based upon the UK’s Immigration Rules and play a key role in delivering a visa service that promotes customer service excellence, welcomes legitimate travelers, supports economic growth and keeps the UK safe and secure.

As an ECO you will ensure that the Immigration Rules are correctly and fairly applied to all visa applicants to ensure that only those who qualify are able to enter the UK.

ECOs are required analyse complex information and exercise skilled judgment within a rules based environment. You will be working in a fast paced, operational environment with an expectation to deliver against agreed operational targets and decision quality standards. ECOs need to be articulate on paper and in person; and have strong IT skills.

Security clearance required:

Please note:  The role will involve access to and handling of classified or sensitive information. All applicants must therefore be able to achieve the UK’s SCE level of security clearance or already hold it.

Essential skills/qualifications:

  • Excellent written and spoke command of English
  • Strong computer skills in particular Microsoft Office, data-based and web-based IT applications.
  • A proven ability, or clear potential, to deliver at pace and use skilled judgment to make important decisions
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; a self-starter and team player able to work on their own initiative and make a positive contribution to the wider team.
  • Pass a comprehensive 2 week ECO training course on receipt of security clearance. The course will likely be held in New Delhi at the British High Commission.

Level of language required: Fluent written and spoken


Desirable skills/qualifications:

  • A background in exercising skilled judgment and making rules based decisions private or public sector

  • An understanding of immigration, migration or law enforcement issues.

Salary will be INR 57,904 per month together with Specialist Skill Allowance (120% of Basic), 80% Security Allowance and an additional allowance of 18% in lieu of Provident Fund and Special Allowance/Superannuation Fund

The gross starting salary will be RS 184,135 per month.

This includes the basic salary of RS 57,904 topped up with three additional allowances:

  • Specialist Skill Allowance of 120% of basic pay = RS 69,485.
  • Security Allowance of 80% of basic pay = RS 46323.
  • In lieu of Provident Fund and Super annuation 18% of basic pay = RS 10,423.

 A full breakdown of salary will be provided.

Additionally (if applicable) the BHC offers a great benefits package that includes annual domiciliary medical cover, plus a Group Hospitalisation Scheme with INR 500,000 floater cover for your immediate family.

 The following amounts may be deduced from your pay each month:

  •  Notional tax at a flat rate of 20% of gross salary will be deducted by the BHC if you are not liable to pay local tax. This applies to all spouses and partners of UK-based officers posted to India.
  • Staff who are not spouses or dependants of UK-based officers are liable to pay local tax. In these circumstances tax is not deducted at source and staff must make their own arrangements to pay tax in accordance with Indian tax regulations.

 Other benefits and conditions of employment  

For British High Commission (BHC) candidates, the Local Staff BHC Terms & Conditions will apply. All local staff receive free comprehensive medical insurance as part of the BHC’s employment terms and conditions.

Successful applicants who undertake mandatory training in the UK will receive pay at the above rates, including allowances, for the days worked in the UK. This pay will only be received in arrears and once you have successfully commenced work in India. Your pay for UK worked days will be in Indian Rupees.

In addition to the Local Staff Terms and Conditions for working in India, UKVI will pay a one-off allowance of RS 100,000 as a relocation grant to support moving-to-India expenses and initial accommodation costs. This allowance will only be paid in arrears after commencing work in India and will be paid to your Indian bank account in rupees only.

Type of Position  

These are fixed term positions of 24 months, subject to successful completion of a mandatory six month probation period. At the end of 24 months, subject to satisfactory performance and on-going business need, contracts can be further extended according the length of your Indian residence visa.

UKVI works a 40 hour week, including an hour for lunch, Monday to Friday, within a core-hours flexible working policy. New staff are entitled to 25 days annual leave with additional leave on all public holidays recognised by the BHC.

Flexible working

UKVI welcomes applications from individuals considering full-time, part-time or compressed hours. The BHC has a flexible working policy for all staff with core hours between 10.00 – 12.00 and 14.00-16.00; your other working hours are normally flexible with the period 07.30 – 18.30.

UKVI will actively consider requests for other working patterns, for example 2 or 3 day working; full-time hours compressed into less working days; longer or shorter working days; or any other workable combination.
