The purpose of the British Embassy in Tokyo is to promote the British Government’s prosperity, security and consular interests in Japan.

The Trade & Investment Section is a dynamic team working to promote British exports to Japan and Japanese direct investment into the UK.  Working with Japanese businesses in infrastructure development mainly in the ASEAN region to identify business opportunities for UK companies is an area of growing interest amongst the Trade & Investment teams of British Embassies/Consulates in the ASEAN region and the Tokyo team is looking for a new member to work on this area. 

 

Main Duties

The jobholder will be responsible for developing and managing relationships with key Japanese stakeholders (government and industry), identifying business opportunities for UK companies and supporting UK companies to win business.  We also require the jobholder to do some capacity building for the rest of the team, which will allow the role to be mainstreamed into the wider team’s work.  


Roles and responsibilities include:

  • Contact development and relationship management; develop a network of key stakeholders in government and industry, develop an engagement plan with them and implement.        
  • Maintain and update  project pipeline list in consultation with project host country DIT teams; prioritisation of projects in consultation with project host country DIT teams, information gathering to update the list, and working with the team to develop a wider strategy for 3rd country collaboration across ASEAN region.
  • Disseminate information on opportunities to UK companies and provide support for them to connect with Japanese companies.
  • Organise relevant events and opportunities in Japan to facilitate networking between UK and Japanese businesses. 
  • Internal admin and capacity building;  upskilling wider team by involving in activities, using senior managers on relationship management, developing a model  as to how the work can be covered from next FY onwards.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the following key skills or experience:

  • Experience in overseas infrastructure business/aid business.
  • Sound knowledge of the main Japanese government and private sector stakeholders involved in ODA funded/PPP overseas infrastructures.
  • Proven skills in developing a contact network to gather information and promote products/services to Japanese organisations.
  • Country knowledge and proven ability to engage Japanese, UK and international audiences.
  • IT skills, (standard Microsoft Office programmes).
  • Experience of working in an English speaking environment.
  • Fluency in either English or Japanese (spoken and written) and business-level skills in the other.

The successful candidate(s) must also be able to demonstrate that they meet the following competences at interview.

Seeing the Big Picture:  Demonstrate awareness for the UK’s interest in the ASEAN region and that of Japan’s and how this translates into business opportunities. 

Collaborating & Partnering:  establish relationships with a range of stakeholders both internal and external to support delivery of business outcomes, actively seek input from a diverse range of people, engage with other sections of the Embassy (eg Political).

Making Effective Decisions: Using analysis to develop strategy for 3rd country collaboration on where most likely commercial outcomes are.

Changing and Improving: Seek opportunities to create effective change in the area of 3rd country collaboration, learning what works well and what doesn’t to develop effective, sustainable approach.

Managing a Quality Service:  Make effective use of project management skills and techniques to deliver outcomes, including identifying risks and mitigating actions; work with ASEAN colleagues to set priorities, goals, objectives and timescales, put customers’ (UK companies) interest first

Leading & Communicating: Convey enthusiasm and energy about their work and encourage others to do the same; recognise, respect and reward the contribution and achievements of others; communicate in a succinct, engaging manner and stand ground when needed; communicate using appropriate styles, methods and timing, including digital channels. 

  • Some familiarity with economic/political picture of ASEAN countries.
  • Fluency in both Japanese and English.

  • The job is being offered on a temporary contract up to 31 March 2018, and is subject to a probationary period of 3 months.
  • Working hours: Monday to Friday, generally 0900-1730 with flexible working opportunities and occasional out of hours working required.
  • Salary of JPY 413,000 per month with 1 month bonus equivalents payable in June and December (pro rata)

(Note: Salary may be reduced due to tax status)

  • Commuting allowance of up to JPY35,000 per month (paid on an actual cost basis)
