Department for International Trade roles (DIT)
Department for International Trade (DIT)

Main purpose of job:

The UK Department for International Trade (DIT) works with UK based businesses to ensure their success in international markets through exports and overseas direct investment, and with overseas companies to look at the UK as the best place to expand and to internationalise their business.

As a member of the DIT Argentina team, you will have two core responsibilities (i) working within our High Value Campaign (HVC) programme to promote the sale of British goods and services to the Rail and Airports sectors in Argentina; and (ii) collaborate to deliver team responses to enquiries from UK and Argentine companies.

Roles and responsibilities:

In September 2016 the UK and Argentina agreed a Joint Communiqué on strengthening bilateral relations, including a commitment to significantly increase Trade and Investment. The DIT Argentina team focuses on five priority sector High Value Campaigns (HVCs) to maximise UK exports to Argentina. Your core role will be to support the Commercial Officer who leads on two of these HVCs, in the Rail and Airports sectors. You will also contribute to our non-HVC programme, responding to a wide range of non-HVC commercial enquiries from UK and Argentine companies. Your roles and responsibilities will include:

High Value Campaigns (60%)

  • Working with a Trade and Investment Officer and DIT teams elsewhere in Latin America, you will be part of two HVCs for the Rail and Airports sectors. Your role will be to identify, develop and generate opportunities for British exports of technologies, goods and services to Argentina in these sectors.
  • You will support the Trade and Investment Officer in developing and managing key contacts and accounts, both Argentine and UK, to help UK companies enter the Argentine market or expand their existing business.
  • You will research, identify, validate and communicate to UK companies a pipeline of new specific high value export opportunities in the Rail and Airports Sectors, and provide follow-up support as necessary.
  • You will support the delivery of activities related to these HVCs, including business visits, trade missions, seminars, marketing and briefing materials.
  • You will develop and maintain a pipeline of possible export wins (actual sales by UK companies) in the Rail and Airports sectors.

Non-HVC (40%)

  • You will have responsibility for receiving, actioning and following-up non-HVC sector enquiries from UK and Argentine companies. Consulting colleagues where necessary, you will provide initial support and assistance, for example through business introductions, desk-based research and sharing of market information. You will issue electronic ‘export opportunities’ for Argentine companies seeking UK products or services.
  • You will provide administrative support for any specialist studies/visits to ‘prospect’ future HVC sectors, for example the retail sector.
  • You will be responsible for maintaining Team databases and contacts lists (for example of UK subsidiaries in Argentina), and have a lead role in drawing up guests lists and managing responses for DIT-hosted commercial events.
  • You will monitor, analyse and report on the Team’s non-HVC activity and targets.

As a member of the DIT Argentina Team you will also contribute to wider British Embassy programmes and initiatives, including support for high level visits, technical exchanges, public diplomacy events and corporate activities.

This is an ideal position for an energetic, motivated self-starter with an interest in International Business and building commercial relationships. The job requires a positive, flexible and pro-active attitude and is suitable for someone who focuses on outcomes and delivering to a high standard. The successful candidate will gain a broad insight in to the working of DIT and international business development.

  • Bachelor's Degree in International Trade, or a related field; or at least two years of experience working with multinational organisations, industry associations and/or consultancy firms or a related field/activity.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication and relationship skills.
  • Expertise and/or contacts in the rail and/or airports industry.
  • Experience of administrative duties.
  • Experience of working internationally and/or as part of a team working in different locations.
