Main purpose of job:

The role of the Political Military Team officer is to provide local insight into relevant political military subjects including the insurgency, security sector reform, ANDSF, NATO and ISAF issues and local government decisions which impact security and stability. The position of local Pol-Mil officer & interpreter/translator at the British Embassy is a dynamic and challenging role in one of the UK’s largest and most high profile Embassies.  Afghanistan is a priority for the British Government and the next few years will be particularly important.

You will be responsible for giving advice on Pol-Mil issues, procedures and providing translation and interpretation for British Embassy staff.   You will also be responsible for representing the UK in certain high-level GIROA meetings.


Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:
 Main Priorities

Specifically the incumbent is required to:

  • Construct reports and analysis which inform Embassy decision making.
  • Represent the Embassy at formal government-to-government meetings and engagements.
  • Provide linguist support to Embassy meetings involving local interlocutors.
  • Provide translation support.
  • Build and maintain a wider range of contacts with Afghan security Ministries, Embassies, Office of National Security Council and relevant Parliamentary defence and internal security committees. 
  • Provide support to Defence Section and Security Sector Reform team

Key Skills/Qualifications Required

  • Fluent spoken and written English.
  • Fluent spoken and written Dari and Pashto.
  • Bachelor’s University degree.
  • Political analysis skills.
  • Excellent interpretation and translation skills.
  • An ability to work on own initiative and under pressure.
  • Excellent computer skills including use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

The following would be an advantage

  • Three to four years’ experience of working in an international organisation.
  • Experience/understanding of Afghan Ministries.
  • Knowledge of Afghan politics.
  • additional languages desirable.

The Local Staff Terms & Conditions for staff working in the British embassy will apply.

 For external candidates, salary will be $3,442.69 (Gross) per month with $100 transport and $125 medical allowances. 

We also offer a competitive package including a yearly performance-related bonus scheme, an annual leave entitlement of 25 days per year, a multicultural environment and learning and development opportunities.

This will be a fixed term contract. The conditioned net working hours are Sunday-Thursday 0830-1630 hrs. The jobholder will need to be willing to work flexible hours within the same overall weekly hours of other Embassy staff, with some events at evenings. Occasional regional travel will be required - security permitting. The content of this role may vary slightly depending on team requirements.
