The British Embassy in Brussels is part of a world-wide network of 230 Diplomatic Posts, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas.

The Department for International Trade (DIT), the UK Government organisation that supports UK-based companies to succeed internationally and assists overseas companies to bring high-quality investment to the UK’s economy, is seeking to recruit a Senior Trade Adviser for Belgium, responsible for Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), healthcare and construction.

Although the appointment is for an indefinite period of time, it is expected that the overall period of service will most probably not exceed March 2021.

The job holder will contribute to the delivery of the DIT Belgium country trade plan and increase UK exports by supporting UK companies in the pursuit of commercial opportunities in Belgium. Main responsibilities involve answering enquiries of UK companies about the local market, identifying relevant commercial opportunities and business partners, organising events and meeting programmes, and building a network of commercial stakeholders. The job holder will be responsible for specific business sectors but will also have the opportunity to work on other business sectors and projects that advance UK prosperity;

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Providing professional advice and support to UK companies wishing to develop business in Belgium, focusing primarily on FMCG, healthcare and construction but also covering other business sectors when required;

  • Undertaking market research and pro-actively identifying commercial opportunities for UK companies

  • Planning and delivering business development and marketing activities such as events, trade missions, tailored visit programmes etc;

  • Developing and maintaining a wide ranging network of commercial partners and multipliers in Belgium as well as in the UK;

  • Promoting business opportunities and highlighting the strengths of the UK’s sector propositions

  • Attending relevant events both in Belgium and in neighbouring countries as required;

  • Contributing to the work of the commercial team and ensuring the delivery of team targets

  • Contributing to the wider economic diplomacy agenda of the British Embassy.


  • Fluently spoken and written English, business level knowledge of Dutch and/or French;

  • A self-starter, demonstrating a flexible, pro-active and entrepreneurial attitude;

  • A strong team player with good people skills, strong ability to network and interact;

  • Good customer relationship management skills;

  • Ability to prioritise, and manage competing tasks within the agreed deadlines;

  • Full proficiency in MS Office applications and use of social media.


  • Understanding of the UK and Belgian business scenes;

  • Knowledge or previous work experience in the following sectors: consumer goods, healthcare or infrastructure;

  • Experience of dealing with business in an international context;

  • Experience in business development.

This is a permanent full-time contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week. Although the appointment is for an indefinite period, it is expected that the overall period of service will most probably not exceed March 2021. This point will be addressed during the recruitment process.

The monthly gross salary for this position is € 4,058.62 B3 (L) level.

Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.

The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.

Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Belgian employment law.

Visa/passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Belgium and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
