The British Embassy in Tel Aviv has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Political Advisor to join the Embassy’s Political Team.

The Political Team, comprised of diplomats and country based staff (CBS), is driving forward the UK foreign policy regarding Israel and UK-Israel bilateral relations. This role requires high-quality written and oral communication, political understanding and judgement, analysis skills, and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.

The jobholder will play a key role in the Political Section’s work, focusing on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, working with teams across the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Embassy and Consulate General, and in London, as well as with Israeli interlocutors from across the political spectrum and civil society. They will support the wider Embassy work, delivering public events, high profile visits, and programmes. The jobholder will report to Second Secretary, Middle East Peace Process (MEPP).

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Developing a range of contacts in the Israeli government and across civil society working on the Palestinian file and a full range of human rights and economic development issues in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPTs), including lobbying in support of HMG policy objectives.
  • Provide detailed reporting and analysis on developments on Israel’s approach to the MEPP, Palestinian issues, human rights, and international humanitarian law (IHL). Prepare briefing notes, meeting records, input to reports of seniors and liaise closely with the British Consulate General Jerusalem.
  • Support the Embassy’s project lead in providing research and advice on programme delivery relating to peace building and human rights, including calls for proposals, evaluation, and scoping.

  • At least two (2) years’ experience in political work, international relations, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, human rights law, or related area.
  • At least two (2) years’ experience of working in an international organisation, NGO, academic institution, governmental organisation, or diplomatic mission.
  • Knowledge and contacts in the Israeli political system and civil society. A confident team player and builder of networks with willingness to work across boundaries.
  • Strategic awareness of UK-Israel relations and the role of the British Embassy in delivering UK objectives. Ability to plan strategically, assimilate information from a range of sources, and see the bigger picture to spot opportunities.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Hebrew both verbal and written. Able to tailor approach to express ideas and messages clearly and concisely to different audiences.
  • Strong attention to detail. Flexibility and ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment. Ability to prioritise own workload and meet deadlines, without compromising the quality of the work.
  • Strong IT skills and literacy in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams).
  • Experience in managing peace building or human rights projects
  • Familiarity with UK policy
  • Experience in organising events, conferences, visit programmes

Eligibility:

If you are selected for this position, we will be able to employ you as long as you:

  • Receive the appropriate level of security clearance; and
  • Are able to work legally in Israel.

Working hours and remuneration:

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including the non-negotiable salary of NIS 13,000 per month plus social benefits: pension employer contribution 7.5% and Keren Hishtalmut employer contribution 7.5%.

No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. Parking facilities are not provided nor paid for by the Embassy.

This position is for a full-time employment, on a permanent contract basis. The successful candidate will be on a four-month probationary period.

Working hours is 37.5 per week. Normal working hours are Monday to Thursday 8:00-16:00 and Friday 8:00-13:30. The Embassy offers a flexible working environment (such as combination of office and remote working), to be considered based on operational requirements and agreement with the line manager, and in line with FCDO and Embassy policies.

The Embassy invests in staff development with a variety of learning and development opportunities.
