Science and Innovation

The intern will join the SIN (Science and Innovation Network) team to support on logistics, planning and preparation for the launch of UK-BR Yr of Science 17-18 and SIN core work (policy) and SIN/DIT campaigns activities in Global Health and Life Sciences, Agritech and Food and Resources and Resilience. 

The Science and Innovation Network team is part of a wider UK Diplomatic Mission’s team – the Prosperity. In engaging with the local science and innovation community we support UK policy and commercial interests overseas.

The role is exciting, wide ranging and fast moving. The successful applicant will contribute to create strategic relationships to harness the value of science and innovation discoveries and investments, leading to mutual UK and Brazilian benefits. The SIN team develop country specific action plans and work to the following global objectives:

Prosperity

  • Enhancing UK growth and exports; connecting UK innovative industries and S&I expertise with international opportunities.

Security

  • Delivering solutions to global and UK challenges: AMR, health, energy, oceans; enhancing global resilience.

Influence

  • Strengthening foreign policy influence through Science & innovation.

Development

  • Supporting international development goals; matching UK expertise to international need.

  

Roles and responsibilities: 

Support government funded programmes in Brazil, looking to increase scientific and technology cooperation between UK and Brazil. On a daily basis this will include:

Logistics (30%):

  • Help to arrange missions and government officials visits.
  • Organisation of science and innovation related events.
  • Help draft outcomes reports, briefings and other documents.

 

Budgeting control and payments (30%):

  • Contact supporting companies and services.
  • Organise and assist payments of outsourced services ensuring Value for Money.
  • Support SIN’s Deputy Director on budget management for post and GPF (Global Partnership Fund).

 Research (20%):

  • Help gathering information to report S&T developments, contacts and policies in Brazil.

 Communication Support (10%):Support comms actions liaising with comms team.

  • Liaison with Comms team in post regarding promotion of SIN’s activities and projects.
  • Monitoring general enquiries from external public.

 Administration Support (10%):

  • Make sure information produced and received are properly organised.

 

The job’s activities will demand different proportions of the above mentioned roles and responsibilities – however they will be split averagely as described. The activities will include organisation of inward and outward missions, official visits, workshops as well as production of reports and official briefings, requiring basic understanding of political and S&I context.

The ideal candidate must have the ability to work under pressure both independently and as part of a cohesive team. We also expect strong organisational skills, strong attention to detail and the ability/flexibility to react quickly to changing priorities. Pressuring months for this position should be December/17 and February/18.
