Who are we?

The British Consulate General in Milan is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The UK Government’s Department for International Trade in Italy is recruiting for a Business Adviser to identify and support Italian companies interested in investing in the UK or expanding their existing operations overseas.

Main purpose of job:

The successful candidate will join a dynamic and inclusive team based in the British Consulate in Milan, and work closely with colleagues across Europe. The Business Adviser will be in charge of innovative business sectors including Life-sciences (including Healthcare, Pharmaceutical, medical devices) and Chemicals. This is a role with opportunities to travel across Italy and Europe, engaging with high level contacts whilst contributing to corporate initiatives such as events promoting diversity, gender equality, sustainability and supporting corporate initiatives not linked to the specific role for the benefit of the Network, i.e. Think Green, Diversity Champions Group, Women & Girl’s Policy Group.

The candidate will benefit from a strong focus on personal learning and development.


Roles and responsibilities: 

  • Promote foreign direct investment from Italy to the UK in line with The Department for International Trade (DIT)’s mission to secure UK and global prosperity by promoting and financing international trade and investment, and championing free trade;
  • Monitor Italian business and economic outlook focusing on the life sciences and chemicals sectors; 
  • Build relationships with key business stakeholders in Italy in these sectors;
  • Keep updated on the British economic climate and policies to support the promotion of the UK as a destination for Italian investment;
  • Work closely with other members of the Italy Inward Investment team and the wider Italy network and other Government Departments supporting delivery of events designed to profile the UK’s inward investment offer to a carefully targeted audience.
  • Actively taking part in corporate activities and initiatives not necessarily linked to the role, for the benefit of the whole Italy team.

 

 Our ideal candidate: 

  • Proficiency in English and Italian (both written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework or equivalent);
  • Client relationship management skills acquired in a business environment, with a clear commitment to excellent customer service;
  • Previous experience in Government / International business promotion agencies or similar organisations;
  • Ability to work effectively and supportively with colleagues and contacts in the immediate and wider team;
  • Ability to respond flexibly to changing priorities;
  • Good sense of organisation and strong communication;
  • Excellent understanding of Italian business dynamics;
  • Good command of MS office package and main communication platform (MS Teams).
  • Understanding of Digital Transformation and  Clean Growth processes across sectors.

This is a full-time temporary position for a 12 month contract, with possibility of renewal, graded AO according to the FCDO grading structure. The annual gross salary is € 32,502.29 which includes €10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year.    

The monthly gross salary is €2,312.00 paid monthly 14 times per year with double salary payments in June and December. An additional amount of € 10.33 EDR is added to the monthly salary and is paid 13 times per year as per local law. If working less than a full calendar year, the additional salary payments will be pro-rata.

Working hours are 35 hours per week Monday to Friday. Work-life balance applies with flexible and remote working when possible.

All staff employed by the/British Consulate General Milan are subject to Italian income tax rate deductions (IRPEF). However the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme. Staff recruited locally by the British Consulate-General in Milan are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.

The Consulate-General will be closed on a number of British and Italian public holidays. Holidays falling on a Sunday may be compensated with an extra day normally added to the annual list of public holidays. 


Local Post Requirements:

  • The appointment is subject to security clearance, professional reference checks and the successful completion of a four month probationary period.
  • Visa / Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Italy and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Additional requirements may become necessary pending EU Exit. If requirements change additional eligibility information will be shared during the recruitment process
