The British Embassy in Washington, DC is seeking a versatile, energetic person to join our Estates Team as a General Maintenance Worker. The Estates Team is responsible for the maintenance and building work for the Embassy and all of the Embassy’s residential properties. We are looking for a highly motivated individual who is committed to service delivery and to working as part of a team. They will need to quickly familiarise themselves with the Embassy’s working practices and policies, but also be able to find creative and pragmatic solutions to challenges. They will need to be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. The Embassy is coming to the end of a major refurbishment and this is an excellent opportunity to support one of the biggest diplomatic missions in the US. The role does not require any specialist skills or experience; we are looking for an enthusiastic, flexible person, who is willing to learn. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Daily checks around the main Embassy compound to identify maintenance issues and to ensure entrances and walkways are safe and tidy.
  • Assist with general repairs to include: woodwork, drywall, painting, plastering, locksmith duties and minor plumbing.
  • Setting up for events in the Embassy’s events spaces and meeting rooms.
  • Escort external contractors around the Embassy and residential accommodation and support them where necessary.
  • Move officers’ furniture and personal luggage etc. between temporary and permanent residences.
  • Interest in practical maintenance.
  • Good customer service and communication skills.
  • Basic IT skills (data entry).
  • Must be able to lift a moderate amount of weight (50lbs).
  • Must have a valid drivers' licence.

Under US State Department requirements, the UK Government in the US has restrictions on the type of visas our non-diplomatic staff may hold. If you are not a US Citizen or a US Permanent Resident, or the dependent of a diplomat (with an EAD card), you may not be eligible for employment with the UK government. We cannot accept student Visas (J, F or M) nor other forms of work Visas (I, H, P). The UK Government does not routinely sponsor work visas; the job advertisement will state clearly whether sponsorship is available.

Working patterns:

40 hours per week. 07:30 to 16:00 Monday to Friday. Occasional overtime and weekend work as necessary.
