The British Embassy in Paris is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. It is also part of the UK’s France Network (including offices in Lyon, Bordeaux and Marseille and representation to international organisations in Paris (OECD and UNESCO) and Strasbourg (CoE)) and is now looking to an assistant to the UK Liaison Magistrate.


The Assistant to the UK Liaison Magistrate will work with the latter to assist her in all aspects of her role to facilitate judicial cooperation in criminal matters between the UK and France. The liaison magistrate works with UK law enforcement and prosecution agencies to ensure effective investigative and prosecution outcomes in the UK and France and develop and improve relationships with French partners.


The liaison magistrate’s work can sometimes involve providing support to UK prosecution and law enforcement authorities with casework in jurisdictions outside of France. The assistant may also be required to support such work.


The assistant will work closely with the UK Liaison Magistrate to provide administrative and organisational assistance including: providing French language support (primarily written, but sometimes oral), ensure that the extensive and varied caseload is adequately managed and reports and records are kept up-to-date, and attend meetings with UK and French partners.


The assistant may also be called upon to conduct legal reseach, help to prepare guidance and briefing documents in French and English and assist the liaison magistrate in preparing and delivering presentations. The assistant may be given independent casework tasks and willl be asked to help the liaison magistrate develop and improve relationships with UK and French stakeholders.


The assistant should be prepared to attend training events to develop and improve their legal knowledge and business skills.


The assistant will be based at the British Embassy in Paris, but may also work with the liaison magistrate at the French Ministry of Justice (subject to the agreement). Travel in France and to the UK may occassionally be required.


The role is open to anyone with the independent right to reside and work in the France. The role will involve close collaboration with UK Government stakeholders and French partners and excellent interpersonal skills and French and English language skills are essential. Organisational skills are a pre-requisite, as well as accuracy and an attention to detail.


The role will be subject to the necessary security clearance.


Main duties/responsibilities include:


  • Provision of written and spoken translation services for the UK Liaison Magistrate and stakeholders, sometimes at pace.
  • Prepare, at the direction of the liaison magistrate, monthly casework logs and narrative reports.
  • Identify case work actions and assist with the progression of case work, sometimes independently.
  • Support the liaison magistrate in the organisation of meetings and conferences. The assistant may also be required to attend meetings and conferences with the liaison magistrate.
  • Conduct ad-hoc, open-source research and analysis, presenting findings in a logical and concise manner.
  • Managing the LM’s diary appointments including organising meetings, preparing and distributing agendas, briefing papers and minutes.
  • Draft responses and assist with report writing for dissemination to UK and French partners;
  • Attend a range of events, meetings and conferences in support of the LM to strengthen the UK-France bilateral relationship.
  • Liaise with partners across the Embassy in pursuit of HMGs ‘one platform’ approach through joint working.
  • General office administration and support to the LM.


  • Fluent French and English (both written and spoken, C2 level for CEFR framework);
  • Excellent communication skills with an ability to work with a range of stakeholders and to convey messages in a professional way;
  • Strong organisational and time management skills – ability to manage competing priorities;
  • Ability to build, maintain, and develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • The ability to work effectively within a small team;
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint);
  • High level of discretion and integrity;
  • Flexibility. Occasionally the position may require the job holder to work extended hours or work flexibly, sometimes at short notice.


  • Legal or law enforcement experience;

  • Previous experience of working in an international environment.
