Main purpose of job:
The British Embassy in Mexico City is looking for a Locally-Engaged B3 (L) Economist to provide technical economic and statistical expertise and analysis.
This is an amazing opportunity, during a fascinating political period, for a talented individual to work at the heart of everything the British Embassy Mexico does, supporting our Commercial, Programme, and Policy Teams in building a strong UK/Mexico partnership.
You will be an expert on economic and financial issues, providing in-depth knowledge and reporting, and presenting, on Mexican macroeconomic fundamentals and public policies, while leading on Financial Services policy. You will play a key role in the development and delivery of annual bilateral Government-to-Government financial talks between the UK and Mexico, and have a key role in supporting our trade policy and commercial work through the development and analysis of trade statistics and indicators, acting as the main liaison between the Economic and Trade Team and the Department of International Trade team in the Embassy.
You will also help provide expert statistical and econometric advice for the evaluation and monitoring (with a robust set of indicators) of the UK’s ODA projects in Mexico (The Prosperity Fund), and play a leading role in setting the direction of the Financial Services Strand of the programme.
Roles and responsibilities:
The role will support the Her Majesty’s Government (HMG) work on Economic Growth, Trade and Economic Security in Mexico by:
- providing high level analysis and economic expertise for macroeconomic developments in Mexico (and the region);
- building and maintaining a network of stakeholders within the Mexican government and academic institutions to support economic reporting and understanding;
- leading on the development of Financial Services policy – to support the Financial Services programme of the Prosperity Fund and to increase UK commercial activity in Mexico;
- liaising with policy officers and trade officers to calculate values and market shares for the UK’s commercial activity in Mexico, ensuring that trade related statistics contribute to the goals and milestones of UK trade policy;
- providing presentations, workshops and advice to a range of internal and external stakeholders around the full spectrum of economic issues in Mexico, and econometric and evaluation techniques;
- supporting the work of the Prosperity Fund Economist by assessing new opportunities for projects by undertaking economic research and analysis, and successfully implementing a monitoring system for Prosperity Fund projects in Mexico;
- contributing towards the corporate activity of the Embassy.

- Have a Bachelors degree in Economics (or related discipline).
- Experience analysing and providing high level reports on key economic and financial policy issues.
- Ability to translate complex and technical issues into readable papers for wider audiences, ensuring that messages are clear, well structured and tailored for a wide audience.
- Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills in English and Spanish (which will be tested on interview).
- Should be a proactive and creative self-starter with strong interpersonal skills who has the ability to learn quickly.
- Able to prioritise in a fast-paced work environment, working largely unsupervised, delivering to deadlines and agreed targets.
- Proven ability to deliver results with short deadlines and with different teams and stakeholders.
- Experience working with Mexican and international databases
- Experience on data mining and Excel
- Intermediate understanding on econometrics and estimation techniques
- Masters degree in Economics (or related subject).
- Work experience in public policy, indicators or/and evaluation.
- Understanding of core international trade concepts e.g. Worl Trade Organization (WTO)
- Knowledge of statistical software (Stata, Eviews, SPSS)
- Knowledge of trade statistics (Trade map, UN Comtrade, OECD stats)
38 conditional working hours a week allowing employees to work flexibly in order to encourage a better work/life balance, 8:00 – 4:30 from Monday to Thursday and 8:00 – 2:00 on Fridays.
