Residence Coordinator

The primary responsibility is to ensure that the Residence is maintained to the highest possible standard and that the services it provides guests and visitors each year serve as a showcase for modern British excellence. He or she will work closely with the High Commissioner (HC), her Executive Office and partner agencies to organise multiple events each month, from one-on-one meals to large (200+ person) events. He/she will manage three other Residence staff and promote a collaborative and positive working environment.  


Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Day to day management of Residence staff (Residence Chef, Residence Attendant and Domestic Assistant) including performance appraisals, motivating and empowering the team, setting direction and promoting best practice;
  • Organisation and supervision of all offical entertainment, including hosting and accomodation offical guests, catering, hiring external staff, setup, execution and breakdown. Liaison with High Commission and Sydney and Melbourne Consulate General staff and casual staff management;
  • Liaison with High Commissioner’s EA/Social Secretary to manage the Residence diary and planned events;
  • Liaison with the Facitilies Management provider (ISS) to ensure maintenance of Residence and garden. This includes timely reporting of all maintenance issues
  • Management of Residence expenditure: separating and balancing the different expenses such as entertainment and representational expenses. Maintenance of financial records and inventories;
  • Assist the High Commissioner to make best use of the Residence in support of business objectives. Work with High Commission staff to identify and take forward opportunities to develop the use of the Residence; and
  • Other duties and responsibilities as required.

  • Evidence of strong organisational, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to deal with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • A sound working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook and Explorer)
  • The ability to work flexibly, depending on the needs of the High Commissioner, including the availability to work flexible hours (including evenings) as necessary.
  • Ability to complete and prioritise work to a high standard with limited supervision and with attention to detail.
  • Experience in the hospitality industry and/or events management or similar role is strongly preferred. Additional training can be provided if necessary.

Salary is at AU$31, 236.50 per annum (paid out monthly), plus 11% superannuation.

The British High Commission strongly supports flexible working. The core hours of the job are 19 hours a week. These are worked on a flexible basis, depending on the pattern of events at the Residence in any given week. TOIL (Time Off in Lieu) is available to compensate for busier periods.

The job will require flexibility around events being held at the Residence and will require some evening and very occasional weekend work.

Initial appointment is for two years. Appointment is subject to an AFP records check and UK security clearance.

Open to Australian citizens, permanent residents, and partners/ dependents of UK-based diplomatic staff currently posted in Australia.

Staff recruited locally by the British High Commission and its Consulates is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Australian employment law.
