 The British Embassy in Spain is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now recruiting for the position of Europe Economic Partnerships Support Officer, based in Madrid.

This is an opportunity to play a formative role in establishing an effective European Economic Partnerships Programme across the FCDO’s European network of embassies. The European Economic Partnerships Programme aims to develop deeper economic partnerships with European partners, and to identify and secure business wins that benefit the UK.  Priorities will likely include energy security and clean growth, new and emerging technologies, and sustainable finance.   You do not need to be an expert in these fields, and will be fully supported in your role.

Based in Madrid, and integrated into the Economic & Public Policy Team, you will work to the Madrid Deputy Team Leader, Europe Economic Partnerships Programming. 

You will also work closely with colleagues in the Europe Strategy and Expertise Department of the FCDO, based in London, and our network of embassies in Europe, to support effective implementation of a range of high impact projects, in line with programming best practice.  

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Providing administrative support to the programming team;
  • Providing project management advice and support to embassies on governance, procurement and other organisational aspects of the European Economic Partnerships Programming; - training will be given to familiarise the successful applicant with FCDO programming best practice;
  • Providing logistical support for events and programmes organised by the European network, where necessary; 
  • Providing financial management support (including forecasting and supporting embassies with setting up relevant financial processes and budget monitoring;
  • Collecting and/or assisting in the collection of best practice and lessons learned to ensure maximum impact of projects;
  • Work closely with embassies to enhance data collection and reporting.

    • Excellent English and Spanish (C level (according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages);
    • Proficiency in utilising Microsoft Office Suite programmes including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint,  Teams and Outlook;
    • Proven ability to work under tight deadlines and to prioritise tasks according to importance and delivery time;
    • Effective communications skills;
    • Experience of working in fast-moving multicultural environment;
    • A positive “Can-do” attitude with proven creative problem-solving skills while under time pressure to deliver results and complete tasks on time.


    • Knowledge of workings of UK government;
    • Experience of project management.

    This is an (AO) grade, full-time contract within a business project expected last until 31st March2023. The working hours are 37.5 hours per week.

    The successful candidate is subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.

    The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.

    The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.

    Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
