The British Embassy in Uzbekistan is part of the worldwide UK diplomatic network working on behalf of British political, economic and consular interests overseas, and is now looking to recruit an Interpreter and Chevening Officer. The successful candidate will mainly provide consecutive interpreting for the Ambassador, other senior officials, and senior visitors, working to and from English, Russian and Uzbek. Occasional simultaneous interpreting will be required, for example during an All Staff Meeting.

As the Embassy’s lead language professional, the successful candidate will also lead on other interpreting in the Embassy, and on translation, again working to and from English, Russian and Uzbek. Colleagues will be available to provide proofreading for translations into the non-native language(s).

The successful candidate will be based in the Embassy’s Political and Public Diplomacy Section, and will be expected to spend some of their time working on other section tasks. These tasks will include becoming the Chevening Country Officer (approximately 30% of the time), leading on promoting and administering the UK’s Chevening Scholarship Programme in Uzbekistan. They are also likely to include leading on the organisation of visits by senior officials, working on our digital diplomacy/social media channels, and contributing to other political and public diplomacy activities such as visit briefing and coordinating briefing packs.

No previous experience is required for these other section tasks, since our priority is to recruit a proficient interpreter. We will provide necessary training for these other section tasks.

Some weekend or evening work, accompanying Embassy officials during business trips within Uzbekistan (up to 15% of the time) may be required.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Embassy Interpreter (30%): to provide consecutive interpreting during meetings for the Ambassador, other senior officials and senior visitors, and others, working to and from English, Russian and Uzbek. The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong command of all three languages. These skills will be tested as part of the recruitment process.

Embassy Translator (30%): to translate official documents, texts and speeches, working to and from English, Russian and Uzbek.

Political and Public Diplomacy Officer (40%): to support other work in the section as required. This may include:

  • Promoting and administering the Chevening Scholarship Programme in Uzbekistan, and maintaining relationships with the Chevening Alumni Network;
  • Leading on inward visits, managing the programme and logistics, acting as the main point of contact for London colleagues and host contacts, and supporting the wider PPDS team in activities such as visit briefing and coordinating briefing packs;
  • Working on our digital diplomacy/social media channels and contributing to other political and public diplomacy activities in support of UK - Uzbekistan bilateral relations.

 

  • Proficient in English, Russian and Uzbek (both written and spoken, minimum of C1 level according to the CEFR framework* / IELTS level 6.5 or above)
  • At least 3 years’ professional experience in interpreting and translation;
  • University/Bachelor's degree;
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Good self-management and organisational skills;
  • Ability to plan and prioritise effectively among competing workloads under pressure.
  • Previous experience as Administrative, Corporate Assistant, Officer Manager or similar roles;
  • Relevant experience within an embassy or international organisation;
  • Good understanding of the UK values.
