Applications are invited for the position of Residence Attendant at the British High Commission in Canberra for a fixed-term contract of 2 years. 

The main purpose of the job is to provide a high quality service at the official residence of the British High Commissioner to Australia in Canberra, working closely with the Residence Manager and members of the High Commission team.

To support  and contribute towards the work of the permanent household team of 4 in delivering all official entertainment; all meal and other catering planning, preparation and service; preparing for and looking after guests; stock controls and some basic administration tasks. To support the delivery of events at the Residence, and on occasion elsewhere, working with other teams across the High Commission. Reporting to Residence Manager, the Residence Attendant is responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the household and the servicing of the principals (High Commissioner) and their guests. Ensure that the Residence facility and services are delivered in a proactive, discreet, timely, thoughtful and unobtrusive manner.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Front of house service for events, setting up and serving formal lunches, dinners, receptions at Westminster House and occasionally at other locations, including co-ordination of casual staff for larger events
  • Provide assistance to house guests
  • Care and cleaning of Representational areas (Drawing room, dining room, breakfast room, reception area including visitor bathrooms, guest bathrooms and guest bedroom suites). Report maintenance jobs, if any, to Residence Manager
  • Resposiblitty for maintaining residence wine cellar including keeping inventory records
  • Care, cleaning and inventory of silverware, crockery and glassware used at the Residence and other offical premisies as required..
  • Care and cleaning of outdoor dining table and swimming pool area and changing rooms during the summer months.
  • Purchasing of goods for offical purposes as required
  • Use of FCO computer systems for email, annual leave and absence recording and inventory recording
  • Application of Health and safety and food hygiene standards
  • Other duties as required as a member of a small Residence team

  • Relevant background in the hospitality industry 
  • Proficiency at MS office suite, in particular MS excel
  • Display a strong desire to deliver a professional, effective and creative customer focussed service.
  • Good interpersonal skills; be able to build team relationships effectively and deliver under pressure.

The 20 hours per week need to be flexible around functions and may involve occasional weekend work.

Salary is at AU$ 57, 487per annum (paid out monthly) on full time employement (pro rata for part time hours), plus 11% superannuation.

Initial appointment is for two years. The formal job description may be subject to amendment in the future.

Appointment is subject to an AFP records check and UK security clearance.

Open only to Australian citizens, permanent residents, and partners/ dependents of UK-based diplomatic staff currently posted in Australia.

Staff recruited locally by the British High Commission and its Consulates is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Australian employment law.
