Main purpose of job:

To deliver and project key UK messages to audiences in the three Cape Provinces and across wider South Africa. You will work closely with communications team in Pretoria to sustain and enhance the reputation of the UK in South Africa through digital, traditional, specialised and new media.

You will work alongside a digital manager, communications officer and Head of Communications support of the UK in South Africa Communications Strategy


Roles and responsibilities: 

MEDIA LIAISON AND COMMUNICATIONS (50% of job)


  • Support the overall UKinSouthAfrica Communications Strategy in Cape Town to promote work in the different policy areas relevant to the Western, Northern and Eastern Cape areas by developing and managing communications plans incorporating all aspects of communication including innovative digital, traditional media and public diplomacy content.
  • Working with colleagues (both in Cape Town and Pretoria) to compile and place opinion pieces, articles and press releases and organising interviews with senior leaders in the Western, Northern and Eastern Cape as required;.
  • Monitor local media for issues that could affect the UKinSouthAfrica including but not exhaustive to economic, political, consular.
  • Work with the Communications Officer and Digital Manager in Pretoria to maximise engagement on social and new media channels, producing content (including videos) for use in the digital space in the Cape areas.
  • Act as back-up to digital manager in managing all UKinSouthAfrica digital channels in their absence, including material from London and the Hub and locally sourced and supplied material. Platforms include the Website, Facebook and Twitter as well as evaluation where required.
  • Support and draft media scripts, working with the Pretoria Communications Team to localise to the Cape areas as required.
  • Assist in media management and promotion of visits by senior officials, ministers and others in the Cape areas. 

 

PUBLIC DIPLOMACY & EVENTS (30% of job)

  • Create and identify opportunities for imaginative public diplomacy initiatives, including those targeting new audiences and young people.
  • Lead on the planning and delivery of senior level British Consulate General events, particularly those hosted by the High Commissioner and Consul General in Cape Town.  Events range from private lunches/dinners and receptions to high-profile public diplomacy events.
  • Custodian of the British Consulate General in Cape Town’s contact database, ensuring the relevant live database is the central portal for mission-wide stakeholder engagement and access point for guest lists.

 

VISITS (20 % of job description – shared with Political Officer)

  • Deliver logistics for visits by senior UK figures, including members of the Royal family, Ministers and senior Government officials.
  • Contribute to planning and thinking on high quality content for visit programmes.   
  • Degree in relevant subject
  • Experience in either communications, media, social media management and/or events management experience in Government, business, academia or other high-profile organisations.
  • Imagination, drive, pro-active approach
  • Skills in digital communication including Facebook and Twitter
  • Design or programming skills
  • Experience of working with international organisations and or government

  • The British Consulate General pays in full for the Key Care Plus option on Discovery Health for staff including spouses/partners and dependants.
