Main purpose of job:

This is an exciting time to join the Department for International Trade (DIT), which  is responsible for  bringing together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade and investment, and help businesses succeed, delivering a new trade policy framework following the UK’s departure from the EU, and promotiong British trade and investment across the world.

Reporting to the DIT Deputy Country Director based in the British High Commission Kuala Lumpur, the job holder will develop and implement the Malaysian element of the Asia Pacific Education trade Plan,  delivering high value export wins, identifying and tackling market access barriers and promoting the UK’s education offer. 

This will include working across our Asia Pacific network, with teams in the wider High Commission, the British Council and the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce- and with our headquarters in London.   

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Represent DIT Malaysia in the 1HMG Xmission Education Working Group, and at Xmission Soft Power Committee meetings as required to unify strategic approach  

Line management of 1xA2 Education Trade Assistant

Trade promotion

Proactively develop and maintain a strong knowledge of the Education market in Malaysia, including through productive relationships with local players, spotting trends, opportunities, challenges and competitors, and use this knowledge in one to one meetings, presentations and market research reports, to help UK players to export to and invest in Malaysia.

Design and execute events and other activity, virtual/physical/hybrid, primarily in Malaysia which promotes UK capability and positions UK players to win business; and consider opportunities to link up with events or comms in other parts of the region

Develop relations with England’s International Trade Advisors, and the export Teams within the Devolved Administrations for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Draft briefing, speeches and programmes for Ministers, other VIPs and senior officials travelling virtually or physically to Malaysia or the UK

Effective housekeeping including uploading evidence of services and interactions with key contacts to the Departmental Database, providing fortnightly updates of activity and progress to the Asia Pacific Regional Trade Commissioner’s office and submitting accurate bids for funding and robust reporting of budgets. 

Market Access and Trade policy

Contribute to, support and participate in meetings of the UK Malaysia Joint Committee on Bilateral Trade & Investment Co-operation, Education Working Group.  Working closely with hq, to drive the right focus and outcomes across the three sub-working groups.

Monitor Malaysian government policy to anticipate new challenges, liaising with UK players to identify and tackle any short term or substantive barriers to exports and outward direct investment, advising and drafting for senior leaders on lobbying approaches.    

Researching and reporting on the sector as required, to support the UK’s accession to the CPTPP.

Essential on arrival:      

  • Knowledge of working with with government and business in Malaysia,
    particularly in the education sector
  • Ability to conduct in-depth research and produce high quality materials against short deadlines
  • Excellent communication, presentation and influencing (written/verbal) skills
  • Line management experience
  • Ability to use the latest Microsoft Office package

Level of language required:  English (fluent spoken and written)

The British High Commission offers a competitive remuneration package, benefits, leave entitlement of 20 days per annum (calculated on pro rata basis) and works hard to provide L&D opportunities to staff.

This position is being advertised as a 24 months fixed-term position in Kuala Lumpur and will be extended subject to performance and availability of funding.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office is committed to developing its staff, working hard to provide a comprehensive L&D offer. Working patterns:

The British High Commission (BHC) Malaysia supports and promotes flexible working.  The standard working hours for the BHC are 8:00am to 4:30 pm. We are happy to offer a variety of flexible working patterns, including non-standard working hours, working remotely or working compressed hours. However, due to the nature of the role, there will be a requirement for occasional out of hours work around events and visits. Time off in lieu can be offered to make up for out of hours work.
