The job holder will support the Director in his work on the trade policy review. The Trade Policy Manager will be the day to day lead and main point of contact for all aspects of the trade policy review between Thailand and the UK. This will involve engaging with senior stakeholders in British and Thai businesses (typically at CEO or Deputy CEO level), and senior officials from the Thai Department for Trade Negotiations. You will collect and analyse information from British companies and British government, which will feed into the final report of the trade review, drafted by you. This report will help to determine our future trading relationship with Thailand. You will be supported by a trade policy assistant who will help you with the gathering and analysis of data, and with setting up meetings and other administrative tasks.


    Roles and Responsibilities:

    • Lead on all aspects of the UK side of the Thailand UK Trade Review, including; drafting and refining terms of reference, primary and secondary research stakeholder mapping, financial analysis, business and sector specific engagement, programme planning, report drafting
    • As part of the review, identify tariff and non-tariff barriers in priority sectors and develop an action plan for overcoming these barriers
    • Work closely with the trade policy team in London on the trade policy review ensuring regular communication between the Thailand and UK teams
    • Horizon scan future opportunities for trade partnerships, including the possibility of joining CP-TPP and draft options papers for different types of trade partnerships that would benefit the UK. These papers will then be considered by the Trade Policy team and your recommendations will serve as the foundation of negotiating our future trading relationship
    • Ensure a joined up approach to trade policy work across the Embassy, including working closely with the prosperity, political and communications team. This will include consulting extensively with our internal teams as the trade policy paper is developed, to ensure that all aspects of the Embassy’s priorities are effectively fed into the review
    • Line manage one trade policy assistant to assist you in your duties, and provide effective coaching and support to ensure they reach their potential within the role
    • Fluent English (spoken and written)
    • In depth trade policy knowledge, including experience of leading or assisting in free trade agreement negotiations
    • The ability to interact at senior levels, including with Ministers and senior business people
    • Experience of undertaking a trade review or similar experience in another related field
    • Demonstrable experience of working on market access issues, with a track record of success
    • Good communicator at all levels, spoken and written
    • Strong administration and organisation skills
    • Flexible and reactive to new issues and priorities
    • Ability to work at pace and prioritise, managing a sometimes heavy workload.
    • Ability to liaise with and manage external stakeholder relationships.
    • Experience in completing timely and accurate written information in English.
    • IT proficiency – Using MS Office, Outlook and ability to learn FCO systems.
    • Ability to travel within Thailand and Asia
    • Experience of living in or understanding of the United Kingdom, British people and culture
    • Ability to read, write and speak Thai
