The British Embassy in Podgorica is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit an Assistant to the Defence Attaché (DA) to assist in delivery of the bilateral Defence programme between the UK and Montenegro and to enable the non- residentially accredited (NRA) Defence Attache, based in Tirana, to further enhance stability and security in the WB region within the framework of Euro-Atlantic cooperation.

The Assistant will also be responsible for the office financial management of the Defence Section Podgorica and act as the Personal Assistant to the Defence Attaché. The individual provides a direct link between the NRA DA and Defence organisations and contacts in Montenegro, and will provide translation as required both in country and on international business trips as required.

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Liaise and assist in implementation of activities from the agreed bilateral defence engagement between the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Montenegrin MoD;
  • Be responsible for the Defence Section office management: financial reports, GPC, budget forecasting, ESCAPADE, etc.;
  • PA to the DA - be the focal point for the DA and coordinate the DA’s diary;
  • Provide written and oral translation / interpretation when required;
  • Coordinate and manage all activities pertaining to military courses;
  • Liaise with external agencies in MNE - MOD, MFA and MOI, as well as the NGO sector;
  • Support the DA in developing bilateral programmes with Montenegrin MoD;
  • Represent the DA at meetings in Montenegro when required;
  • Accompany the DA and MNE delegations on business trips as required, providing financial and administrative support and translation as required;
  • Facilitate customs clearances;
  • Completion of local accounting (PAG) forms;
  • Assist in preparing and delivery of inward and outward visits to and by Montenegrin Ministry of Defence and Montenegrin Armed Forces.
  • Fluency in English and Montenegrin (both oral and written);
  • Proficiency in administration and organising of events and activities;
  • Previous experience in dealing with budgets;
  • Excellent writing, reporting and monitoring skills;
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, MS Power Point and Internet; 
  • Adaptability, flexibility, pro-activity, excellent team-working skills and ability to work under tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of defence and security matters;
  • Previous work experience for international organisations;
  • Knowledge of the Montenegrin society;
  • Some knowledge of the regional defence and security systems is an advantage;
  • Project management qualifications and experience;
  • Drivers licence (highly desirable);
  • Knowledge of Albanian would be useful. The  jobholder will be able to fluently converse with Serbian assistants in Belgrade, for Western Balkans Regional Network advice and over flight clearance advice.
