Department for International Trade (DIT)

The British Embassy in Lisbon is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. Currently, the Department for International Trade (DIT) is offering an internship of 5 months.

Main Purpose of Job:

The project will consist of supporting the DIT team in delivering 3 market research specific projects:

    1) UK Exports Analysis

    2) Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Analysis and

    3) Outward Direct Investment database

This internship will provide the successful candidate with a working experience at the level of International Business Development with a unique insight of the role of a Government Agency supporting UK companies to exporter and invest overseas, and in attracting Portuguese FDI to the British market.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Market Demand research - UK Exports Opportunities

  • Market research – to identify top commercial opportunities;
  • Market research - identify Portuguese market demand in key sectors split by size of Portuguese company (SME/Large companies/% turnover);
  • Identify key UK-Portugal bilateral trade drivers;

Market research - Foreign Direct Investment Opportunities

  • Assess Investment flows to see what sectors and activities (CAE) are prominent;
  • Identify the major players within each one of activities/sectors, and their supply chain;
  • To deliver a lead generation exercise (direct survey & telephone contact);
  • To identify new companies with potential to internationalize in the UK in a number of pre-defined sectors;

Outward Direct Investment

  • To build the database of UK companies operating in Portugal –identify new players;
  • To identify a contact point on those companies;
  • Promote the range of support services provided by DIT to eligible UK based companies;

  • Fluent in English and Portuguese, oral and written;
  • Strong analytical skills, notably in the gathering, processing and analysis of statistical data, and critical judgment;
  • Sound knowledge of the Portuguese economy and business environment;
  • IT skills (mainly Microsoft Office, Word and Excel);
  • Good awareness of the international economic and business environment;

This is a full-time, 5 month internship contract for 5 working days (35 hours net) per week.

The successful candidate will be subject to a professional background and security clearance and must have pre-existing work authorisation for Portugal in order to apply. The British Embassy does not sponsor for work permits.
