View Vacancy - Consular Assistant Alicante (maternity leave cover) (ESP18.525)
The British Embassy in Spain is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now recruiting for the temporary position of Consular Assistant (A1), based in Alicante.
The selected candidate will assist the team, providing a high quality, professional and efficient consular service to visiting and resident British nationals in Alicante. Full induction and training will be provided to the successful candidate.
Main Duties / Responsibilities
- Handle and process Emergency Travel Documents at the British Consulate in Alicante and support back office work such as recoverd passports and office management tasks
- Produce Emergency Travel Documents
- Answer customer enquiries at the Consulate and by post/email/telephone
- Provide support to consular officers by handling simple consular assistance cases
- Provide general office support/administrative duties
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills - ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in Spain and the UK as well as the public
- Attention to detail, strong analytical perspective and problem solving skills
- Ability to work at pace and prioritise, managing an often heavy workload
- Fluency in both English and Spanish (a minimum of C2 level)
- Experience of office management
- Experience of assisting British nationals overseas
- An understanding of the issues that British nationals (tourists and residents) may face in the Alicante consular district
- University degree
- Driving licence
All applicants should have the right to live and work in Spain. The British Embassy does not sponsor work permits.
This is a full-time temporary contract as maternity leave cover for approximately 6 months duration. The working hours are 37.5 hrs per week. Normal working hours are Monday to Friday 0800 to 1600 hours. However, some flexibility will be expected as, on occasions, out-of-hours assistance to British nationals may be required.
The successful candidate will be subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance, and the successful completion of a probationary period.
The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy/Consulate based on gross annual salary.
Regarding taxation, the Consulate in Alicante is part of the British Mission in Spain, and as such supervised by the British Embassy. The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of Spanish income tax at the legally required rate.
Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.
