The British Embassy in Lisbon is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit a full-time Senior Trade & Investment Adviser to be part of the Department for International Trade Team (DIT).

The jobholder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of DIT’s activities in the Life Sciences and Technology sectors. The purpose of this role is to assist UK companies to make full use of the business opportunities in Portugal, and to deliver significant business outcomes. It involves identifying relevant opportunities and business partners, answering enquiries about the local market, and designing and managing events, which promote UK companies, securing sponsorship where necessary. As part of their work, the successful candidate is expected to achieve results within budget, meeting DIT’s corporate standards for quality of service and business impact.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Proactively identify opportunities for UK companies in Life Sciences Services and in IT technology-based sectors in Portugal;
  • Match the UK offering to local market opportunity to help optimise UK business development in Portugal;
  • Support Regional Europe South Lead in Life Sciences;
  • Services Campaign in Portugal to deliver high value Export Wins for UK companies;
  • Creating commercial opportunities for UK businesses;
  • Manage project delivery promotional and follow up activities to meet annual performance targets (based on the value of business won by UK companies);
  • Build government and industry stakeholder partnerships to support Portugal’s ambition to boost innovation and technology development and promote UK capabilities, experience and excellence to relevant Portuguese stakeholders;
  • Promote opportunities in Life Sciences services sectors and IT-based sectors to British companies and relevant business organisations;
  • Co-operate closely with other Embassy teams, relevant external stakeholders and DIT colleagues across the Europe South region;
  • Actively contribute to relevant high level/VIP visit programmes;

  • University Degree in any subject related;
  • Proficiency in English and Portuguese (written and spoken);
  • Working experience of at least 4 years in trade & investment, preferably in Life Sciences Services and in IT technology-based sectors;
  • Account management experience;
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines;
  • Excellent time management and prioritisation skills;
  • Ability to research and analyse complex information;
  • Self Starter – ability to work well on own initiative;
  • Good IT skills, especially MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel;

  • Good knowledge of the Portuguese and UK business environments;
  • Project Management experience;
  • Nuanced understanding of the potential ramifications of the UK’s exit from the European Union and strategies to address this;

This is a fixed-term, full-time contract (35 net per week) of 12 months with the with possibility of renewal subject to a 30 days probation period.

The British Embassy in Lisbon aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role of € 27,861.82 per year gross annual salary paid in fourteen installments, provided that the individual in question is subject to individual income tax (IRS) in Portugal on the employment income in question or, alternatively, is subject to income tax on such income in the UK; plus a monthly meal allowance of 134.00 Euros.

All staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Portugal are subject to local Portuguese employment law as well as internal regulations in force at any given time.

The successful candidate will be subject to a professional background and security clearance and must have pre-existing work authorisation for Portugal in order to apply.

The Embassy will not consider applications from existing staff who have not successfully completed their probation period or, in the case of staff on temporary contract who have not yet completed two thirds of their contract.

Visa/passport requirements: Must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Portugal and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
