The purpose of this job is to lead the UK Government’s trade and investment work in Western Australia as part of a wider UK Department Trade and Investment team in Australia.  Reporting to the Director of Investment in Brisbane, the job holder will set strategic direction in accordance with the DIT country and business plans and be responsible for increasing the level of Foreign Direct Investment into the UK from WA. The job holder will give business set-up assistance, sectoral and locational guidance and expansion support to both new and existing, high-value, Australian businesses to fast-track the delivery of successful UK footprints.  The job holder will also be responsible for ensuring any business facing elements of programmes for Ministers and VIPs are of high quality and support DIT’s objectives.

The job holder will also play a wider representational role in support of the UK government’s objectives in Australia and Western Australia.


Roles and responsibilities:

This exciting, outward facing role requires the identification of high value and scalable, innovative Australian enterprises with high-growth foreign direct investor (FDI) potential. It involves formulating and executing strategies aimed at generating leads for FDI to the UK from the WA region of Australia and requires the jobholder to have a broad knowledge of industry sectors as well as state and federal economic policy. The role also requires liaison with the wider Australia team, HQ and marketing teams on high value campaign (HVC) work in some key sectors. The role will require attendance and presentations at events and relationship building at certain industry forums, and a require an ability to communicate effectively. Knowledge of industry multipliers and partners to actively support and leverage outcomes will be viewed favourably. The role will include an element of travel to visit FDIs, as well as for learning and development. 25%

This role requires working with prospect and active FDI projects and influencing their internal decision-making processes to secure newly ‘landed’ investments/expansions which benefit the UK; through key account management, project management, relationship management, and administration of the department’s data needs. The role requires collaboration through a virtual team structure in Australia and New Zealand with team colleagues based in Perth, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland. And also with UK based sector colleagues, UK regional teams, and a centralised  investment services team which supports with UK economic, industrial and consumer research. 50%

This role involves the dotted-line management of one colleague in Perth who contributes to a separate UK trade exports target (as well as any temporary interns that may be recruited). A management function will also require sound administration and be accountable for accurate, budgeting and forecasting in line with value for money and policy.  The role will include some strategic support and assistance to the broader DIT team (including with the UK trade exports colleagues). 20%

This role also currently involves local ‘Head of Office’ leadership (not but not direct-line management) of colleagues at the British Consulate in Perth. The successful candidate will chair office meetings and represent the Perth office at network meetings. In addition, the role also requires some UK representational work in support of FCO objectives including (but not limited to) supporting  High Commissioner visits to the region and representing the High Commissioner at the ANZAC and the Remembrance Day services. In the event of a crisis in the region (e.g. a large-scale consular incident), the Head of Office would play a leading role in supporting  the British High Commission inCanberra, which would lead our crisis response . The Head of Office will help disseminate internal communications, and support some local events such as learning and development days and the Consulate awayday. 5%

  • Bachelors degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate field
  • A minimum of five years’ work experience in business, ideally in an international & B2B context, or in business development.
  • Ability to develop and maintain networks with senior decision makers
  • Strong inter-personal networking, presentation and communication skills
  • Good knowledge of the Australian business environment
  • Ability to deliver to ambitous targets and outcomes
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • IT literate
  • Some knowledge of the UK’s business environment, and some regional centres of the UK.
  • Some knowledge of the processes involved in overseas company expansions (foreign direct investment).
  • Some knowledge of investment deicision processes.

Salary is at AU$ 98,663 per annum (paid out monthly), calculated pro-rata, plus 11% superannuation. With 5% responsibility allowance for Head of Office responsibilities ($4,933).

Initial appointment is for two years. The formal job description may be subject to amendment in the future.

Appointment is subject to an AFP records check and UK security clearance.

Staff recruited locally by the British High Commission and its Consulates is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Australian employment law.
