To provide executive and operations support to the British Consul General, Sydney, who is also the Regional Director for Trade and Investment for Australia and New Zealand and responsible for the UK Department of International Trade’s (DIT) work in the region. 

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Provide a high quality service to the Consul General and Deputy Consul General ensuring day to day activities, meetings, internal and external communication and events run smoothly.
  • Support the Consul General and Deputy on operational matters including comms with the DIT network, HR, budgets and team management.
  • Ensure diaries are managed efficiently, arranging and booking travel and co-ordinating the Consul General’s visit programme across the ANZ network, in the Asia Pacific region and to the UK.
  • Provide support for the wider team and Australia network on arranging programmes and logistics for Ministerial, VIP and other official visits.
  • Organise events hosted by the Consul General at his Residence, in the Consulate General and at other venues as necessary.  Managing invitations, guest lists, co-ordination with members of the team, arranging catering and security, ensuring that all events are run to an exceptionally high standard. Some events may require early starts or evenings.
  • Working with DIT colleagues and others in Sydney to support event management for British company events, round tables, trade missions, exhibitions and conferences and other internal and external DIT events. Ensure value for money from catering suppliers and other service providers.
  • Develop and maintain a database of contacts for the Consul General and his wider team. 
  • Provide research support as necessary on commercial, economic and political issues for speeches, analysis or operational business.
  • Receive, sort and prioritise incoming communications, invitations, mail and pass to relevant staff for action.  Consult and draft suitable replies on behalf of the Consul General where appropriate.
  • Manage the Consul-General’s and Deputy Consul General’s budget and expenses. Track expenditure against allocation for both the Consul General’s and Deputy’s budgets, monitoring value for money across all expenditure.

 

    • Self Starter – must be able to work at a high level of intensity on own initiative using judgement, strong problem solving skills, and displaying resilience
    • Excellent interpersonal skills – ability to deal with difficult situations with tact and diplomacy and a high degree of confidentiality when required to achieve desired outcomes.
    • Strong, proven adminstrative skills, diary management and programme arranging.
    • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
    • Must be confident in dealing with senior figures, Ministers and VVIPs and their offices.
    • Good desk research skills and excellent writing skills
    • Tertiary Qualifications and/or appropriate experience
    • It is essential that the successful candidate is a proficient and confident user of Microsoft Office software – particularly Outlook and Excel
    • Knowledge of business and international trade
    • Some direct experience of event management

    Salary is at $70,890  per annum (paid out monthly), plus 11% superannuation. Flexible work arrangements may be considered. 

    Appointment is subject to an AFP records check and UK security clearance.

    Open to Australian citizens and permanent residents in Australia.

    Staff recruited locally by the British High Commission and its Consulates is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Australian employment law.
