The Assistant to the UK Liaison Prosecutor will work with the latter to assist her in all aspects of her role to facilitate judicial cooperation in criminal matters between the UK and France. The Liaison Prosecutor works with UK law enforcement and prosecution agencies to ensure effective investigative and prosecution outcomes in the UK and France and develop and improve relationships with French partners.

The Liaison Prosecutor’s work can sometimes involve providing support to UK prosecution and law enforcement authorities with casework in jurisdictions outside of France. The assistant may also be required to support such work.

The assistant will work closely with the UK Liaison Prosecutor to provide administrative and organisational assistance including: providing French language support (primarily written, but sometimes oral), ensure that the extensive and varied caseload is adequately managed and reports and records are kept up-to-date, and attend meetings with UK and French partners.

Main Tasks:

  • Provision of written and spoken translation services for the UK Liaison Prosecutor and stakeholders, sometimes at pace.
  • Prepare, at the direction of the liaison magistrate, monthly casework logs and narrative reports.
  • Identify case work actions and assist with the progression of case work, sometimes independently.
  • Support the liaison magistrate in the organisation of meetings and conferences. The assistant may also be required to attend meetings and conferences with the liaison magistrate.
  • Conduct ad-hoc, open-source research and analysis, presenting findings in a logical and concise manner.
  • Managing the LP’s diary appointments including organising meetings, preparing and distributing agendas, briefing papers and minutes.
  • Draft responses and assist with report writing for dissemination to UK and French partners;
  • Attend a range of events, meetings and conferences in support of the LP to strengthen the UK-France bilateral relationship.
  • Liaise with partners across the Embassy in pursuit of HMGs ‘one platform’ approach through joint working.
  • The assistant may also be called upon to conduct legal reseach, help to prepare guidance and briefing documents in French and English and assist the Liaison Prosecutor in preparing and delivering presentations. The assistant may be given independent casework tasks and willl be asked to help the liaison magistrate develop and improve relationships with UK and French stakeholders.
  • The assistant should be prepared to attend training events to develop and improve their legal knowledge and business skills.
  • The assistant will be based at the British Embassy in Paris, but may also work with the Liaison Prosecutor at the French Ministry of Justice (subject to the agreement). Travel in France and to the UK may occasionally be required.

  • Fluent French and English (both written and spoken, C2 level for CEFR framework);
  • Excellent communication skills with an ability to work with a range of stakeholders and to convey messages in a professional way;
  • Strong organisational and time management skills – ability to manage competing priorities;attention to details
  • Ability to build, maintain, and develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • The ability to work effectively within a small team and take direction, as well as the ability to work independently when required using his/her initiative to proactively support the work of the Liaison Prosecutor.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint);
  • High level of discretion and integrity;
  • Flexibility. Occasionally the position may require the job holder to work extended hours or work flexibly, sometimes at short notice.
  • Legal or law enforcement experience;
  • Previous experience of working in an international environment.

This is a full-time (35 hours per week) fixed-term position for 12 months with possibility of renewal.
