UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) China is one of four international offices (Beijing, Brussels, New Delhi, Washington DC) providing in-country representation for UK Research and Innovation, the UK's £7bn public body funding research and development.

UKRI China contributes to the development of UK-China R&D funding strategy, facilitates the delivery of excellent joint programmes, documents and measures the impact of UK-China collaborations, and provides a voice for UK excellence in research and innovation in the world’s most dynamic R&D landscape.

We are currently recruiting a Programme Officer to join our small and highly effective team to support the work of UKRI China by leading on specific programmes, contributing to our analysis and reporting, and continuing to build and strengthen our excellent partnerships with Chinese stakeholders.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Support the delivery of 1-2 UKRI China research and innovation programmes annually through communicating with UK and Chinese partner organisations and facilitating peer review of grant applications;
  • Responsible for monitoring policy developments and research outcomes in specific sectors that are relevant to UKRI and supporting the team to produce briefings as required;
  • Organising workshops and events to support the implementation and communication of UKRI China programmes;
  • Support colleagues to deliver data and statistical analysis as required;
  • Take responsibility for a sector of UKRI China’s investment portfolio, build knowledge and relationships with relevant stakeholders and support the integration of UKRI investments with Embassy policy and business objectives.
  • Excellent all round education including a university degree.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Chinese;
  • Confident in communicating verbally with external and internal contacts at all levels of seniority;
  • Strong numerical skills and experience using data and statistics to inform senior stakeholders and to deliver analytical reports;
  • Ability to proactively build relationships with a stakeholder community and to influence, persuade and negotiate with stakeholders;
  • Experience of managing projects proactively with minimal supervision;
  • Experience working in a multicultural environment and a diplomatic interpersonal style;
  • IT skills, especially MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Previous experience of working for a research funding organisation and peer review processes will be seen as an advantage;
  • Knowledge of UK and/or Chinese academic research context, strengths and priorities will be seen as an advantage;
  • Experience of managing relationships with colleagues working remotely will be seen as an advantage.

This job will require travel around China and occasional travel to the UK.

We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary, good leave entitlement, and insurance plan, etc. The gross salary (before all deductions) is CNY 17,870/ month for Chinese Nationals and an abated monthly salary of CNY 24, 746/month for British Nationals and spouses/ partners (all nationalities) of diplomats who are ‘W’ (diplomatic) visa holders and meet passport criteria..

We also offer excellent development opportunities and a 22-day annual leave entitlement in pro rata.

Conditioned working hours is 35 hours/ week from Monday to Friday and flexible working can be arranged upon personal needs.
