As a Dialogue Partner of ASEAN, the UK’s engagement with the group continues to increase. The UK Mission to ASEAN is looking for a suitably qualified and professional Political Assistant (Comms). The job holder will be part of a team within the UK Mission to ASEAN, responsible for supporting the UK’s engagement on the Political-Security pillar.The job holder will be the Communications lead within the Mission and will help the Political-Security team deliver the ASEAN-UK Plan of Action. The job holder will work with the Mission on both internal and external communication, increasing the visibility of the Mission and its activities. The job holder will also sometimes support the policy work of the team and deputise for other team members when required.

The successful candidate will be required to handle a broad range of tasks, have a flexible attitude and be able to work with a significant autonomy. Roles and responsibilities:

  • Communications:
    • Develop a Comms plan for UKMis ASEAN;
    • Manage UK Mission to ASEAN’s communication in accordance with HMG policy, including through maintaining an updated social media calendar in coordination with Posts in the region and in London;
    • Monitor social media accounts and media outlets on relevant information related to UK-ASEAN Dialogue Partnership;
    • Contribute to draft tweets, social media posts, or op-eds on events, programmes and  visits.
    • Work closely with the the Ambassador and comms teams in the UK and Indo-Pacific region to amplify messaging.
  • Knowledge: build knowledge on ASEAN and share information and policy recommendations with others through written reports and oral briefings.
  • Writing and analysis: work closely with the Political Officer to write up the ASEAN weekly update, which is circulated across the region and London. Assist the Mission across a broad range of emerging political issues when required.
  • Contact building: develop a personal network of relevant contacts.
  • Corporate: support the Embassy’s extensive social and corporate activities.
  • University graduate in relevant subjects, such as Communication or equivalent experience.
  • Previous comms experience.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English; ability to draft a wide range of correspondence.
  • Proactive and willing to take initiative.
  • Flexibility and resilience under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to work with people of different levels and background.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications.
  • Understanding of ASEAN and multilateralism
  • Video editing and infographic skills
