The British Embassy in Stockholm is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Prosperity and Social Affairs Attaché.

This is a new position that has been created to help develop the economic relationship between the UK and Sweden in the context of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU in March 2019, and the creation of a new economic partnership between the UK and the EU thereafter. 

The job will focus primarily on social and environmental policy, as well as other areas of economic policy that will be important to the negotiations and the future economic relationship.  The job will also support the delivery of the Embassy’s Prosperity Plan, designed to enhance the economic policy dialogue between the UK and Sweden and strengthen the business environment for British companies in Sweden.

As well as analysis, reporting and lobbying on the relevant subject areas, the work will also involve running events and visits by UK Ministers and senior officials, and providing cover for other members of the Political Section as the need arises. 


Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting the 2nd Secretary Political / Economic in delivering the Embassy’s Prosperity Strategy to support the UK-Sweden economic relationship;
  • Analysing and reporting on Swedish social (education, health, employment, pensions and social security, consumer policy) and environmental (including food, agriculture and fisheries) policy, and promoting UK government objectives in those areas;
  • Providing analysis and reporting to inform the negotiations on the UK’s future economic partnership with the EU in specific areas (e.g. aviation).
  • Knowledge in using Microsoft Office suite;
  • Good research and analysis skills;
  • Good understanding of international affairs and Swedish politics;
  • The Embassy operates in English and fluency is essential. Native level fluency in Swedish is not essential though the jobholder will need to be able to confidently engage in Swedish and follow media reporting, Swedish language seminars, etc.
  • Academic qualification in International Affairs;
  • Experience of Government, Embassy or NGO work.
