Applications are invited for the role of Trade Development Officer at the UK’s Department for International Trade office in the British Consulate-General in Auckland. 

The UK Department for International Trade (DIT) is the British Government Agency which works with UK-based businesses to ensure their success in international markets, and encourages the best overseas companies to look to the UK as their global partner of choice. DIT operates in 100 international markets and has teams in five offices in Australia and an office in Auckland, New Zealand.

This position will provide support for the delivery of DIT’s trade services to assist UK companies to succeed in the New Zealand market as well as to contribute to broader UK Department for International (DIT) team objectives.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Delivering chargeable services to UK companies seeking to explore opportunities in New Zealand including research analysis and reporting on various aspects within the New Zealand market, ranging from industry sector overviews to niche products and services.  This will also cover programme arranging for UK companies visiting New Zealand.
  • Providing event management for British company launches, trade missions, exhibitions and conferences and other internal and external DIT and Foreign and Commonwealth Office events. Some events may require early starts or evenings.
  • Responsible for monitoring and maintaining client databases, monthly reporting to the Director of the Australia & New Zealand network across a range of KPIs, monitoring the Auckland team budget and reporting monthly to the Service Delivery team in Sydney.
  • Collaborating with Communications Team to develop and implement communications plans to increase brand awareness and recognition for UK firms. May include use of social media to highlight business opportunities, good news stories, and market trends.
  • Seeking, identifying and reporting business opportunities for UK companies using various sources including electronic tender services.
  • Contributing to achievement of the overall trade team performance targets.
  • Responding to new UK company enquiries and taking appropriate action.
  • Logistical support for VIP and UK Ministerial visits and other high profile visitors.

We are looking for a candidate who has strong administrative, event management, good desk research and excellent writing skills. S/he should be an excellent team player who can work on their own initiative with the ability to take a wider perspective. The candidate should also be confident dealing with senior government officials, visiting VIPs and high level private sector contacts. S/he must hold a bachelor's degree relevant to the position or an equivalent level of appropriate experience and should be a confident user of Mircosoft office software. Communication and digital marketing is a plus. 

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate strengths in the following competences (and provide evidence of this in previous jobs at interview):

  • Achieving commercial outcomes – Excellent research skills with the ability to draw information from a variety of sources and identifying the most relevant for UK businesses.

  • Leading and communicating – strong communication skills, both written and oral, and customer focus, with the capacity to liaise confidently with businesses by telephone and in person.
  • Collaborating and partnering - Demonstrated ability to use initiative and solve problems, seeking guidance where necessary, and the ability to work effectively in a team.

Salary is up to $59,737 per annum (paid monthly) dependent on qualifications and experience, plus up to 5% superannuation subsidy on a $ for $ basis. The role offers great learning and development opportunities, through formal training, on-the-job learning and taking on new challenges. 

Appointment is subject to achieving a clean New Zealand Police records search and UK security clearance.

Appointment is subject to a 90 day trial period pursuant to section 67A of the Employment Relations Act 2000.
