This is an exciting opportunity to join a friendly and creative communications team at the heart of the British Embassy. We are looking for a confident and energetic Communications Officer who will work as part of a flexible team leading on the development and delivery of media strategies and activities for a range of Embassy teams including trade and investment teams.

The successful applicant will need to demonstrate creativity, initiative and dynamism to maximise the impact of our communications across all media channels, both traditional and digital. S/he will need to be proactive – always looking for new opportunities to promote our message.  S/he will need good planning and organisational skills to plan and deliver professional media events and well thought out campaigns.

S/he will also need to have excellent communication and influencing skills.  S/he will build strong relationships with teams within the embassy to truly understand their priorities, advise them appropriately, and develop effective messages and communications plans. S/he will also need existing (and strong ability to develop) relationships with representatives from the media to successfully pitch stories reflecting UK government priorities to print, broadcast, online and social media and deliver our messages persuasively and robustly. S/he will also work with the Digital team to ensure creative and appropriate messaging via the Embassy’s online platforms.  

The Media Team is a busy team but we work in an environment where all team members support each other during particularly active periods. There are often opportunities to try new projects or work on different areas. The job may involve occasional travel within China or to the UK.

Subject Area Communications: Proactively engage with teams on their communications priorities, develop, deliver and evaluate communications strategies and activities to support and promote team’s work.

Work closely with teams on:

  • Financial and professional services
  • Infrastructure Alliance and Infrastructure Academy
  • Education
  • Sport and Creative Industries
  • Retail and Food and Drink
  • Embassy Open Day

These activities would include (but not be limited to):

  • Traditional and digital media planning (including analysing media options) and content development;
  • Writing communication materials (e.g. tweets and other social media content, briefings, scripts, press releases,);
  • Arranging media interviews;
  • Event management (press conferences, media briefings);
  • Message planning (working with sections to create clear, impactful communications messages);
  • Evaluating success of communication activities;
  • Internal communication activities;

Visit: Lead on media activities for visits by relevant Ministers, VIPs, and experts and visits by senior UK Government officials to regional cities. Develop ideas for media opportunities to deliver the visitor’s objectives, provide high quality briefing and advice and leverage high-impact coverage.

Supporting the broader media team as required.

  • Highly profiecient spoken and written English and native Chinese
  • Degree level qualificaiton or equivalent
  • Excellent contacts in Chinese media
  • Social media and communication experience
  • Qualification in PR/Communications/Journalism
  • Understanding of international, especially UK-China, relations
  • Excellent contacts with Chinese trade media
  • Experience of working with or in Chinese media

We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary, good leave entitlement, and insurance plan etc. The gross starting salary for this position before all deductions is CNY 17, 670 / month for Chinese Nationals and an abated monthly salary of CNY  24, 529/ month for British Nationals and spouses/ partners (all nationalities) of diplomats who are ‘W’ (diplomatic) visa holders and meet passport criteria.

We also offer excellent development opportunities and a 22-day annual leave entitlement in pro rata.
