Main purpose of job:

The internship offers an excellent opportunity for a motivated quick-learner with an interest in politics, international affairs and human rights to join the team in the Political Section at the Embassy. The position is open to students from all fields, but may particularly suit a student of Political Science, Law or Economics in the last year(s) of his/her Bachelor’s degree.

The Political Section at the Embassy liaises with senior political stakeholders in the Peruvian government to advance the bilateral relationship and collaboration in key policy areas. It engages with a wide range of public and private stakeholders to produce political analysis aimed at informing wider decision-making, particularly on Peruvian domestic politics, UK foreign policy priorities, human rights and multilateral policy. The political team leads the implementation of the Embassy Human Rights strategy, including related projects, and runs the Chevening Scholarship Programme for Peru.

The Political Intern will contribute to the fulfilment of the Political Section’s objectives.


Roles and responsibilities/What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

The intern will support the other team members in the delivery of the section’s targets, and collaborate in the analysis of relevant aspects of Peruvian politics and legislation, as well as human rights issues. The intern will assist the Chevening Officer.


As we are in an election year, the intern will be expected to assist particularly with quantitative and/or qualitative electoral analysis to ensure that the Ambassador, Embassy team and wider colleagues are well informed about electoral developments.  


Other tasks include but are not limited to the elaboration of supporting documents and Spanish/English translations, stakeholder engagement, logistical support at events and other administrative tasks as required.

 

Other skills / experience / qualifications:

-  Desirable: Experience with political and/or electoral analysis

-   Creative thinking and the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.

-   Good IT skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)


Language requirements:

Language: English oral and written proficiency is essential.

Level of language required: Excellent.

Candidates must be eligible to live and work in Peru in their own right.  The successful candidate will be subject to a security clearance and professional reference checks.


The successful candidate will put into practice work-related skills such as research and report writing, stakeholder management and networking.  The intern will gain first-hand experience of life in a busy, international mission working on a broad range of initiatives.
