The British Embassy in Dublin is part of a world-wide network, representing UK political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit a Science and Innovation Network (SIN) Officer.

The purpose of the job is to lead on building and developing the bilateral relationship between Ireland and UK ministries, academic institutions and organisations with an interest in science and innovation; to provide insight into Irish reactions to UK science policy; to influence Irish science policy, and to facilitate bilateral co-operation.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop and secure, senior Embassy and UK Government buy-in to SIN Ireland’s priorities and strategy. Design and deliver SIN Ireland’s business plan;

  • Build knowledge of priority thematic areas and proactively develop a wide range of contacts in government, business, universities, and public research organisations in the UK and Ireland to support the delivery of the SIN country business plan;

  • Monitor and respond to developments in science and innovation policies and programmes, particularly in priority thematic areas. Provide timely and concise reports on key developments to Embassy leadership and key colleagues in the UK government;

  • Design and deliver a programme of projects, events, digital and traditional comms and other activities aimed at facilitating collaboration between the UK and Ireland and enhancing visibility of UK’s science excellence and innovation capacity in identified priority areas. Work collaboratively with colleagues at Post to aid delivery, ensure value for money and maximise impact;

  • Support Ministerial and senior official visits to Ireland relating to bilateral science and innovation issues;

  • Support the wider work in the Embassy including providing surge capacity and engaging in corporate activities.

  • Fluent Level of English (C1 level*);
  • University degree and at least 3 years’ relevant work experience in sciences;

  • Expertise in life sciences (precision medicine, immunology or anything Covid-19 related would be particularly useful);

  • Good knowledge of UK and Irish research landscape and science and innovation policies, and ability to spot and act on opportunities for collaboration;

  • Ability to work in an international and inter-cultural context;
  • A self-starter, with the ability to organise self and work effectively;

  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively on shared objectives with colleagues;

  • Good knowledge and/or experience of working in government;
  • Good networking and influencing skills, including with senior contacts;

  • Good understanding of, and focus on customer needs, and ability to meet deadlines;

  • Good IT & digital media skills including MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Twitter.

  • Ability to start to work in May;
  • Flexibility to travel domestically, regionally and internationally, once the current Covid-19 situation allows;

  • Experience working in or with the research sector and a network of relevant contacts;

  • Experience working internationally;

  • Experience of project management.

This is a full-time position, for a fixed-term contract until end of March 2022, 41 hours gross per week.

Depending on the development of the Covid-19 situation, there will likely be a requirement to undertake some travel in Ireland and in the UK. The successful candidate will also be required, on occasion, to work outside normal office hours.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Ireland are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Irish employment law.
